Adapted (i.e., shredded and stitched into incoherence) from the 1974 Japanese series Saru No Gundan, Time Of The Apes follows the travails of a scientist and two small children who are accidentally frozen and thaw into a future ruled by apes.
I love cheesy Japanese tv shows and even better with MST3K. I love Mystery Science Theater 3000, and when they riff on a cheesy Japanese movie, even better! If you want to see a bad ripoff of a Charlton Heston movie, this is your ticket.
A Japanese mother and her two small children are accidentally frozen and thawed out in the far future, when apes rule. Chipper, but I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. Partly this is because this "movie" was actually two disparate episodes of a Japanese TV show stitched together, and partly because even as the obvious PLANET OF THE APES rip-off it is, it isn't very convincing. One of the host segments features a re-creation (sort of) of the Scopes Monkey Trial. It was a tough episode to write; said Mike Nelson, "I believe one of the typists died."
