The premise is creative, your strange great-aunt tells you to open one, and only one, of 3 magic boxes in the event she doesn't return by the end of the month, which she doesn't.
Okay, I'll bite. What is going to happen?
Come to find out, depending on which box you open, one creature (in 2 boxes, it's a person) is plucked from a reality where they are about to die, and are saved. That is about as good as this book gets, because the execution is sloppy.
First, despite the urgency of this note, in several branches you can open more than one box, and there is no reason why you could only open one. There is also no reason that your aunt had to be gone -- she does reappear in several stories. I mean, if she loves me so much, why not play this game with me before she left? Also, sometimes time travel results in strange effects, but other times nothing happens at all as you are tinkering with time, and there is no explanation for the discrepancy.
None of the stories are especially clever, but I decide to go with 3 stars because I was interested in the premise, if not entirely satisfied with what followed. I would call this book "lower middle class." Some authors use the injection of magic into a story to avoid being disciplined, and I believe that is what happened here.
