Was Scylla always a feared sea-monster, or was she a victim of jealousy?
What had summoned the beast of Itsumade into the skies? For how long would it reign in terror?
Why is Anansi one of the most popular myths across Africa?
We have all been exposed to a mythological beast in one form or another. Whether it is Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson playing an oversized scorpion man in The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King, or the character of Anansi in Neil Gaiman’s American Gods; these magical creatures have a deep connection to the mythologies and folktales of ancient cultures.
Where did they come from? What relevance do they serve in mythology? Why are some so obscure, while others become pop-culture enigmas? Get the answer to these questions, and learn about beasts from different world cultures.
Folklorist Zayden Stone dives deep into the stories of these magical beasts and provides
- a fictional anecdote,
- a retelling of the original myths,
- an analysis of the symbolism and relevance of the creatures,
- and then pairs it with some beautiful black and white illustrations reimagined by artist Herdhian.
In the second volume of the Mythical Creatures and Mythological Beasts book, the illustrated guide takes you through six themes that have been specifically chosen since they are consistent across cultures. The categories include:
- arthropods for insects, crustaceans, and arachnids;
- avian for birds;
- canines for wolves and dogs;
- serpents for snakes and dragons;
- ungulates for hooved animals like horses and cows; and
- aquatic for water dwelling beasts.
Presenting the creatures in categories makes it easier to see what the beasts have in common. You will find some overlapping themes across ancient cultures that point to universal ideas in how humans perceive the world.
If you have a love for the myths and want to learn about the unique beasts that dwell within them, this book is a great way to do it. Not only will you learn about ones you may have never heard of, but you will also be able to draw parallels between cultures and see how they interpreted their surroundings through stories of mythical creatures and magical beasts.

There isn’t much to say about this novel- it’s not all that different from the first I reviewed. There are the same categories, and it still hits about a 3/5 for me. However, there were an even larger number of creatures I had never heard of- and I still love how varied Mr. Stone makes it, including creatures from Norse, African, Aztec, Finnish, Persian, Slavic, and even more ancient origins. I love the amount of research that had to have gone into this- I wouldn’t even know where to start on half of these. I think if someone is looking for a book that has creatures beyond the norm, myths they’ve never heard of even if they’re seasoned in mythology, this is a good book to start with. Now… I have to go write a story with a Jorōgumo.

Mythology: mytho ~ story & logos ~ spoken.
The tales, stories we have heard from our elders..passed on from generation to generation..for spending away time, teaching moral lessons or for a spiritual purpose.
Irrespective of the reason, it always has some magical element &/or some heavenly relation, one with the powerful God.
Volume 2 of this series released on 20th Nov. 2021 & is around 200 pages.
Zanden has culminated & then divided all the varied magical creatures, one can think of! It is actually mind boggling!
He divided ➗ them into 6 main categories;
Arthropods, avian, canines, serpents, ungulates & aquatic.
If you have read 📚 & imagined books like HP, Hobbit etc & enjoyed em, then this is for you!
The b/w illustrations add to the imagination.
The cover is beautiful & makes the book 📖 eye-catching & one to keep & treasure.
Each chapter is dedicated to a creature & myths, stories related to him are narrated there. The illustration, the creature's name, the vivid description & the small snippets/ stories are enchanting to say the least!

― Niranjan Mudholkar, The Kingdom of God
Folklores and Mythological tales have always been my favourite from the start. They provide a different realm of fantasy and thrill altogether. Mythical Creatures and Magical Beasts: An Illustrated Book of Monsters from Timeless Folktales, Folklore and Mythology: Volume 2 by Zayden Stone is one such fantasmically written book.
Divided into six different sections - Arthropoda, An Ancient Aviary, Cryptic Canines, The Eternal Hiss, Unusual Ungulates, and Aquatic beasts, the book talks about eccentric supernatural beings from their very origin. Each character has been well researched and depicted through the magnificent illustrations and well built-up writing.
The author takes us to a literary ride from countries such as Japan and China to South Africa and Salvia. At almost any given time the reader could visualise themselves being part of the fantasy too. The beautiful illustration accompanied with the text provides a clearer view into imaging the mythological beasts. Plus the cover is one of the most intricate and pretty cover I’ve seen recently.
Myths, legends, and folklore have always been a part of our culture, irrespective of which country/religion we belong to. Each of these stories has been passed down to our generation by our ancestors. Volume 1 of Mythical Creatures and Magical Beasts had descriptions of various creatures in 6 categories - Arthropoda, An Ancient Aviary, Cryptic Canines, The Eternal Hiss, Unusual Ungulates, and Aquatic beasts. Volume 2 continues with the same, showcasing more creatures in each of these 6 categories.
This book take us on journey of various mythical creatures of different civilization across the world such as Chinese, Persian, South African, Japanese, Salvia and many more.
Book talks about their folklore, origin, apperance and other miscellaneous stuffs which you will ge to know once you pick this up.
Some of my favourite creatures which I liked the most are Itsumade, Strix, Huma and Psoglav.
The author has done a wonderful job of compiling all classic mythological beasts both known and unknown to us and has divided the book into six parts of mythical beings and each one is unique and spectacular and sucks the readers into the world of mythical creatures and magical beings!

Author: Zayden stone
Review: The book is a sequel to the book magical creature and mythical beasts volume1 The book is about folklore of creatures deeply rooted in mythology and stories.
I can only imagine the insane amount of research that went into this book .
In the Mythical Creatures and Mythological Beasts book, the illustrated guide takes you through six themes that have been specifically chosen since they are consistent across cultures. The categories include:
arthropods for insects, crustaceans, and arachnids;
avian for birds;
canines for wolves and dogs;
serpents for snakes and dragons;
ungulates for hooved animals like horses and cows; and
aquatic for water dwelling beasts.
Now this this there in the first book but is covered more in detail in this one .
There are folklore stories and myths from different parts of the country and world
I think I am thankful he penned these down as these were mostly stories passed through generations through mouths
I really thought he had outdone himself in the first book but the second volume gets even better
If you like mythology and are interested in local folklore I suggest read both volumes
4/5
🧜🏼♂️Author - Zayden Stone
🧜🏼♂️Genre- Fiction
🧜🏼♂️This book contains six sections and each section contain beautiful chapters. Here I have mentioned a few of them, which I liked the most. The following are:
🧜🏼♂️The Jorōgumo is one of the most dangerous shapeshifters in Japanese mythology.
🧜🏼♂️Scorpion Man -They symbolize resolute defence and security for royalty and laypeople alike. Created to be frightening members of a monster army, they are fearsome guardians and protectors.
🧜🏼♂️ Anansi- Anansi is usually depicted as a black spider with a cheeky anthropomorphized face. Rather than his appearance, it is his character that is important to the many tales he features in.
🧜🏼♂️ Itsumade- Itsumade is a legendary monster with a jigsaw of body parts. It has a human face but with a bird-like beak lined with sharp and jagged teeth and a reptilian body akin to a dragon, with clawed talons and enormous wings with a span of almost five meters. It is a striking and terrifying figure who appears in the sky only at night. According to Japanese legend, the Itsumade is drawn toward the torment of deceased victims of terrible or violent circumstances.
🧜🏼♂️ The Book of Mythical creature by Zayden Stone was filled with so many mythical characters from all over the world. The writing was great. Some creatures had longer descriptions than others. I liked that the book had dedicated pages to all the creatures, etc. It was an exciting read.
🧜🏼♂️ It's not a lengthy book and takes you to the imaginary world.
🧜🏼♂️Description of each character beautifully jotted down. furthermore, you will see the picture of all the creatures from the beginning.
