Just about everything the guy did musically was pure genius. His work could, and often did, flirt & flow into varying musical genres sometimes in the same song! Sure, that sounds like a recipe for a real mess(read:crap) but not in the hands of a true visionary, such as is the case with Serge here!

This early album, though, demonstrates his smokey jazz-club stylings in full force and it's pretty straight forward; the real epitome of Cool. The song "Intoxicated Man" is reason enough to purchase this, but it's all just as killer with no filler.Dont be a schmuck and let it go out of print,daddy-o - buy it and thank me later...

This is my first taste of Serge (very recently) and I must say I am very impressed (even though I don't speak a word of French) - enough to start hunting down all of the reissues of his better albums (if only they were easier to locate!). I can't compare it to his other work because I don't own any of it but I would guess that this would be a very good starting point for those who are curious and on a bit of a budget because it is a very consistent and cohesive album. It kind of sounds like everything you think great French pop would and should sound like, only better! The only problem is that it is about 20 minutes long, however that is 20 minutes of total quality - there isn't a weak moment anywhere. This is very smooth, jazzy lounge pop, with Serge crooning seductively over the top - in fact, he has a much better voice than I expected. I think this is a good place to start because it isn't particularly indiosyncratic or even adventurous, even though you can see that Serge obviously has talent and an ear for melody and arrangement. The bonus tracks are also terrific, with more of a 60's rock feel than the album tracks. In fact, what is most impressive about this album is that it was released in 1962, a good 3 years before the Beatles started to come into their own in an artistic sense. It's hard to imagine a more accomplished popular music album being released in 1962.....go out and buy it!
