1GB graphics memory.
Nice metallic finish.
3h Battery life.
ASUS Software automatically updates the BIOS for you, no need for a degree in programming or HTML. Nice.
LED screen is fantastic (1980 resolution, wow).
Blue ray built in for travelling with the kids.
Laptop runs cool and is fairly light compared to some others i've owned.
No volume dial control.
No Back up discs.
Speakers are kind of big.
There is an inch around the laptop screen not used; they could have made the laptop smaller without giving up on screen size.
50 Updates to Windows 7, took forever even at high download speed.
Updated the optional Intel Graphics driver and got a blue screen of death, but the laptop recovered from it.
Power cord on the back (yuk) is prone to fall out.
Overall I love it.
HP was never a consideration after they jerked us around a few years ago on a clearly defective model that overheated, killing the wi-fi card and warping the left hinge and screen bezel. They claimed that we, and hundreds of others who had similar failures according to online forums, were responsible for breaking the hinge and bezel. Only after the warranty period on the model expired did they own up to it. Unfortunately, we had smashed the thing with a sledgehammer in a cathartic burst of frustration (before we had seen Office Space)and moved on to a Toshiba Satellite before HP owned up to the problem, but I digress.
So, I was looking for a laptop that was a jack of all trades and master of none. I wanted an affordable, mid-size, lightweight, not quite bleeding edge, reasonably fast gaming, high-end multimedia, desktop replacement that could sync to everything in the house and not have components "go legacy" on me two months down the road. Is that too much to ask for? Well, I think I did it. So far it has met all of my expectations and had a few surprises as well, such as a dual boot system built into the hardware (the left on/off button launches a stripped down OS that will let you quickly do a number of simple tasks like browsing, while the right one launches Windows).
I chose ASUS for a number of other reasons.Read more ›
however, the start up speed is llittle bit sluggish and the keyboard flexs on the right side. other than that it's a good buy for the money
*Battery life: Online the laptop was advertized to have a 2 hour battery life. With stock settings my laptop lasts an average of about 4 hours and 10 minutes.
*Temperature: It is VERY cool and I have yet to hear the primary fan kick in (and trust me, as a gamer, if it hasn't yet, it isn't going to any time soon).
*Ram: The 6 GB of ram is JUST fine for a regular user or gamer. Any more would be an unnoticeable difference.
*Processor: The i5 processor gives you more bang for your buck. As the most advanced 2nd gen i5, it has more processing power than the lower grade i7 (2.3 GHz vs 2.0 GHz) which would end up costing you almost $200 more. Worth it? No.
*Screen: People complained in other reviews that it could be larger, but to me this screen felt huge. Plus the 1080p FHD is unbeatable. It's truly gorgeous. Perfect for gaming on high resolution.
*Web Cam: This laptop's integrated web cam is even better than my desktop attachable web cam. The 2.0 megapixels make this laptop ideal for skyping or having online video conferences. The built in cover of the webcam is especially useful.
*Speaker: Excellent quality. This laptop has excellent audio, especially for classical music. I'm not sure why but classical music always sounds incredible on this speaker.
*Noise: This laptop is completely silent. Aside from the barely audible internal sounds, this laptop is as silent as a night in the suburbs. Literally! I often sleep with it on while downloading media and I can barely tell its there.
*Weight: This laptop is very light.Read more ›
