Model: ASUS N73JQ-XV1, purchased on Amazon on Nov. 19th.
Previous laptop: ACER TravelMate 5583
I was searching online for a new laptop because the video card (nVIDIA Geforce Go 7300) of my 3.5 yr old Acer laptop (TravelMate 5583) was broken and the estimated repair fee was rocket high 250US. My aim for the new computer was a desktop replacement model, a compromise between portability and performance. Originally, I wanted ASUS G73-JW (~1,450 US) which offers i7, 17.3" full HD display, 6GB ram, 460M 1.5G video card, and USB 3.0. The super high-end spec. would almost make sure upgrade-free for couple years down the road. I then wondered if I ever need that much power in video card, and if people may misjudge my profession due to the "Gamer" feeling of G73-JW. Then I saw N73JQ-XV1 offering almost everything I wanted with 250US less. I read the above review (and was the only review on N73 on Amazon)and decided to go for it on the very next day. By paying 20US shipping fee, I was able to rush the shipping before Thanksgiving.
It is a great buy.
Here is my personal Pros and Cons. Nothing is absolute, it really depends how you see them.
Pro: 1. Even under high performance setting, this laptop is fairly quiet. It also produces very little heat. It even has "quite office" mode. 2. The B&O speaker provides great volume and very good quality. Not like it can replace surround systems or my Altec MX5021, but good enough for normal use. 3. 17.3" screen is beautiful. Although the maximum resolution is high HD (1600*900) not full HD (1920*1080) which ASUS G73 offers. 4. Large touch pad with convenient multi-touch features. Personally, I prefer using an external laser mouse. 5. Full size keyboard + number pad. I can now type very fast on this keyboard, but did take me few days to adapt the spacing and layout. 6. Love the silver aluminum top, overall design and build quality. 7. Media key on the left side of keyboard is very convenient. 8. Built-in Office 2010 starter (Nothing fancy, but saved my life once when I did not have Office installed and did not have access to the Internet.) 9. 3D mark 2006 is about 7000. ( default setting, 1600&900, no AA). 10. Webcam cover for extra security.
Cons: 1. Heavy and bulky. It barely fitted in my Samsonite top loading Xeon bag for 17" laptop. Make sure you bring the laptop with you when buying bags or sleeves. 2. Battery life is about 2hr. Adaptor is like a mid-size brick, and gets little warm after whole day use. Fair for a desktop replacement machine, but you probably do not want to carry this laptop all day. 3. It is so quite that I can head the reading head movement of the hard-drive. 4. The product stickers ( Intel Core i7, Windows 7, nVIDIA, EVERY STAR, USB 3.0, ASUS N73J) are not perfectly aligned. Not trying to be picky, but all my previous notebooks' stickers were placed much more properly. This is the first time I have intention to remove these stickers, especially the Energy Star sticker which is right adjacent to the touch pad. 5. I will probably upgrade the memory from 4GB to 8GB in 2 years. For Acer and Dell laptops, I only needed to unscrewed the memory location at the back of the laptops. However, according to ASUS manual, it appears that one need to remove the keyboard first and remove the screws underneath to change memory.
Final thought: 1. This is a great laptop for the money. It offers a lot of high-end and critical spec. (e.g. USB 3.0) 2. If money is not an issue, extra 250US for G73-JW is still a good deal. You get more d-rams ( 2GB more), faster video cared (nVIDIA 460M), full HD screen, larger HD ( 250GB more), and other cool design like back-lite keyboard. Batter lives are similar for both models.
Like others, I chose this machine for its specs. I travel a good bit as part of my job (250+ nights in a hotel every year) and was looking for a reliable desktop replacement. Given I use a significant amount of multimedia in workshops, the sound and graphics capabilities of the N73JQ particularly intrigued me.
Pros
Sound is the best I've heard on any laptop. It truly stands out. I've had the opportunity to listen to music on an HP Beats machine and there's no comparison.
Screen is also top notch. There were no dead pixels and it was far from sluggish ... best I've seen on a laptop.
I was worried about heat and subsequent fan noise. Asus has done a wonderful job here as well. The unit, and in particular the wrist rest, were cool to the touch. I'm not a game player, but I did put the graphics engine through it's paces best I could.
Cons
I was frankly disappointed in the overall speed of the system. After installing a performance monitoring utility, I learned the CPU was not being challenged, but the memory was constantly pegging with nothing more than a browser, MS Word, and windows explorer open. 4 GB on this system is not going to allow for much multitasking.
Right from the start, I experienced problems with the DVD drive in making a backup of the operating system. I constantly received error messages and wasted a number of DVDs before I merely re-started the write process when I received the error. In general, the DVD drive was noisy and would intermittently not stay closed.
On arrival, the top of the display was separated. It was not cracked, scratched, or disfigured and thankfully snapped right back in to place. Nonetheless, it was cause for concern RE the overall quality/build of the machine.
Not sure what they were thinking with the keyboard layout ... the placement of the "insert" key is awful. It's part of the "delete" key and requires the pressing of a function key. In general, I quickly became accustomed to the feel of the keys. What I didn't get accustomed to was the relatively small size/closeness of the keys. I have large hands and have always purchased a 16"/17" screen because the keyboards tend to be a little larger. That was not the case with the Asus. I touch type and had a time of it. The sad thing is there is plenty of real estate to the left that could have allowed Asus to separate the keys. Instead, there are volume/multimedia keys that could have been placed in the empty space above the keyboard (i.e., like most other laptops).
When I did a fresh install of the operating system (given the above, I made the decision yesterday to return the unit), a new app "Asus Express Gate Cloud" appeared. It was pretty lame, but more importantly, wasn't present during the initial install. I'm wondering if my machine was in fact new?? Yes, the box was sealed and it looked "new."
Finally, the restored system locked up multiple times. When I shipped it back, it was still locked up "Preparing your desktop ... " Perhaps it's related to the DVD drive problems?
Amazon/Buying Online
Throughout, Amazon's customer service was great. To date, there have been no problems in returning the defective unit. As a result, I ordered the replacement from Amazon as well.
Pro: Speed is ok Large screen Nice large harddrive Sound is good Like that it came with 6GB of memory, but would prefer 8GB. Liked that it had one USB 3.0 wish of them where 3.0
Cons: If you run in turbo mode all the time the machine will shutdown I still do not like the keyboard after almost 1 year. ASUS will void warranty if you upgrade the memory yourself. Not easy to upgrade memory (must remove keyboard), but is can be done Had trouble getting information on how to upgrade memory. Picture quality and resolution is only OK not great.
I would look for something else if doing it again. Will and can live with this for now. I think I would get a 15 inch instead which would make it more portable.
