Checking online I found this was not an issue with my device only, but a generalized issue which has not been addressed by WD. I have tried all the suggestions on how to fix the issue but over a month time after all options have been exhausted, I realized it was just a waste of time.
Over all, a terrible product. Don't waste your time and money on WD.
I got the 1TB version and had average expectation to find that it's useless for storage and as a media center.
The reason is that it's simply slow.
For wireless beck up and playback...the average write speed is 2-3MB/s...
And if you connect via the gigabit port ,you don't get much improvement. The maximum R/W speed is 5MB/s(megabyte).
So imagine if you will pack up a terabyte of media..it will take the whole life to do do.
Even I bought the WD my book live and connect it through the router's gigabit port and did not see significant improvement.
As a router it's just ok....but this specific model is more expensive because of the useless storage that it has ....
I thought at the beginning that it's defective so I replaced it and the second one is the same.
Even I formatted the disk and after that there was no way to access it via the remote access or DLNA and WD customer service is not helpful.
The only benefit of this router is that it educated me about routers, media servers and other things like gigabit connection. The reason is because it's so frustrating I spent nights and nights to understand and figure out where is the problem through reading in the Internet.
I tested it with my desktop ,Alienware SSD laptop, and other related product like the latest Panasonic TV,all of them are the latest in electronics:)
I will get the netgear centria and update this review soon.
If you are an average internet user like most people and want easy storage at your fingertips, then this is a great choice.
The connections are fast and reliable, the user interface is easy.
The only thing I found weird was that when trying to download torrents if I don't turn off the FasTrack my torrents are limited to like 5kb. Also I haven't tried wireless for my blu ray with Netflix but wired through my xbox360 seems to be just as terrible as always, very hard to get an HD stream, I have the feeling it is the netflix xbox app anyways. I have 2 phones, two laptops, a tablet, and a pc on the wireless with my xbox wired, and nothing seems to slow it down.
Those that complain about transfer speeds I think are asking way too much in the storage department, you are moving huge amounts of data through the air people! Do you expect instant transfers of large gigs of data? Get real. I moved my entire 41 GB of movies from my laptop to the network hard drive in about 15 minutes or so, plenty fast for me. also it shows up on the xbox360 as a media server so you can stream movies music and pictures straight from the router.
Like I said if you want to play with port forwarding and UDP, and TCP and network proxy settings and things like that, this router probably isn't for you, if you have no idea what I just said and want a decent router with network storage than BUY THIS ROUTER.
