Gisela’s Hausmann’s Naked Truths about Getting Book Reviews did not quite give me tips on working miracles, but did impart a lot of common sense on how to adopt a sensible strategy to get reviews for your book and on how to deal with them—good or bad—when you do get them.
What I liked in particular are her suggestions for getting readers to submit reviews and for approaching other potential reviewers, including top-ranked reviewers, without rubbing them the wrong way. Hausmann has sensible suggestions for how to spot and avoid fake and “orchestrated” reviews.
She has some unexpected insights to throw on low-ranked (one star, two starts) reviews and how they can actually benefit the author.
I highlighted her suggestions on how best to incorporate the book reviews you receive into your blog. I will be going back to them in due course.
As someone who is hoping to gets tons of glowing reviews one day for my own publications, I finished Hausmann’s book wiser than when I started it. I only wish she had concentrated a little on answering the questions (may be a survey to get these questions?) of fiction writers; she primarily appears to be a non-fiction writer herself, and her book, without being blatant, is focused more on that category of author.
Not only was this book packed with useful tips, it was short and direct--my kind of read. I just love it when authors get straight to the point. Gisela covered several topics that I had never even heard of. Thankfully, I haven't committed all of the crimes listed in there, but I definitely gained a great deal of knowledge about the review process.
It would have been great to see more in-depth information about the process of acquiring 'verified purchase' reviews concerning the Kindle Unlimited program, being a Prime member, and receiving a loan or gifted copy of a book, but perhaps that's a book all its own.
I highly recommend this book to any author who would like to know how to become a top Amazon reviewer or would simply like to increase his/her number of reviews.
Naked Truths About Getting Book Reviews is a short book but it is packed full of information. The author, Gisela Hausmann, has a clear and succinct style of writing. Much like the review requests we should be writing she makes every word count. The is no superfluous language here. This book is set out in a logical, almost mathematical manner, with each step to be taken clearly described. There are examples of good and bad approaches to show exactly what she means and explanations given as to why some approaches are more effective than others.
As a top Amazon reviewer Gisela knows what she is talking about, and we as authors are privileged to get such useful advice so cheaply and so well presented. This book is a must buy for every indie author about to begin the daunting task of self promotion.
But I got it because it was about what I needed to know, reviews, and did actually have a good number of reviews to its name.
I finished it the same day I purchased it and can tell you now, it is worth the money. Not only did it show me new places I could get reviews, but also it taught me the best way to go about it, and what I should do before I tried those avenues. Any book that delivers on its promises, deserves the 5 stars.
If you are new writer like me, do yourself and favor and get this book, or you'll be stuck learning these lessons the hard way.
