My five year old is really into science so we bought him this as a special present and he's loved every part of is. Be advise, you really need a parent present to do most of the activities and you will need a couple extra items not included int he box - like two litre soda bottles etc. But he loves every part of it and I would definitely recommend.

I purchased this for my daughter for science since we homeschool. We prefer hands-on learning and this looked like we would get the best value for our money. We've done the volcano multiple times, and compared reactions, are in the middle of the crystal-growing experiment, and have enjoyed the mineral digs. We have yet to do the tornado experiment. This is a quality kit, I have purchased others and have had issues with them. No problems with the National Geographic kit! I will definitely be looking into their other kits for future science units. Don't look elsewhere for a quality kit at a good price, just grab this one. Some tips:
1. When doing the volcano explosion, do it in the kitchen sink, and make a tray with aluminum foil to direct the flow of the reaction directly into the kitchen sink. This allows you to do the experiment multiple times and with good-sized walls of aluminum foil holding the mess it makes for easy cleanup.
2. If you get a mineral identification kit, you can take the mineral lessons further.

I think the birthday girl will love the gift anyway, but it would look so much better if it had the NG logo and a picture of what was inside.
