My kids are 11 & 12, boy and girl, the complete set. They love polished rocks and crystals and anything that looks like treasure. Many of the movies and shows they watch feature characters hunting for gems and crystals and gold that look very much like the rocks and minerals in this kit.
The first impression was a little messy. The box was oozing sand everywhere. I guess there isn't much way around this, but it wasn't a clean or neat experience. It wasn't a big deal, but just know that it may arrive with some sand around the box.
Opening the box is pretty straightforward and there are several packages with different types of gems and minerals in them.
The fossils were a BIG HIT with my kids. It is easy to forget, as an adult, how magical and awesome a shark's tooth was when you were 12 years old, but watching my kids let me experience the joy and wonder of it all over again.
The "snail shell" fossil was a winner too - it is filled with some sort of modge podge clear filler and it really brings out the beauty of the fossil. My kids loved that one too.
The geodes are hit and miss - because they are real geodes and because they are small, you will get a variety of different innards and not all will be amazing looking. Again, my kids were wowed by them. They weren't expecting deep purple and red crystals, for them - just seeing a plain rock broken open to reveal quartz-like crystal on the inside was outstanding enough to make them happy.
I'd love to see slightly larger rocks and minerals, but overall, my kids REALLY liked this set. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good present for an 8-12 year-old kid. There is just something about the natural beauty of the earth and these stones really do give a great insight into how amazing the earth really is - plus my kids love surprises and the geodes are as natural of a surprise package as you can get!

We have still yet to break open the geodes!
The shark teeth that come with the kit are really impressive. The only downfall is we didn't get the piece of meteorite. But so much was in the kit I honestly thought it is well worth the price still!
I know it says 8 plus but myself and my 7 year old both loved it!
