If you don't own the previous versions, this is almost a 5 star game. The biggest complaint is the game caps your max skill at 90, or in a few cases 92. Meanwhile the NPC players in the league can go up to 99. The only way around this is to buy temporary (1, 3, or 5 games) stat boosts. This is a thin veiled attempt to suck up more money. Assuming you're cool occasionally spending 5 bucks here and there the other players won't be "running circles around you." However, you should know the temporary stat boost option is NOT AVAILIBLE for the PC version. You needed to buy this game for Xbox or Playstation.
LeBron's story line is kind of interesting. Block shots now have a better animation which actually makes it look like you're blocking a shot. If you jump early you can now land on and knock down other players which is more realistic than previous games. "Stealing" the ball has been overhauled and it's now possible to do so w/o fouling out of the game.
The net performance is better than I've experienced on PSN, and the controls work wonderfully on my Logitech Gamepad F710 .
After downloading I jumped straight into an online game...this, friends, is a big mistake.
The first thing that you should do is ensure that your performance benchmark has completed. Go into your settings-->Video Settings-->Performance Benchmarks...
This takes less than a minute. It affects your online performance heavily. Be sure to do this...
Other than that (and the UN deal), this game is simply superb. The physics seem more realistic and the overall presentation is a lot more streamlined.
They say the music is Lebron's picks, and those pics have been pretty good so far. I remarked to myself, during my last game, that Lebron picked a better Jay-Z song than Jay-Z (in "The Ruler's Back," from "The Blueprint"...otherwise known for "Takeover" [the Nas and Mobb Deep diss])
Either way, this is realistically a must buy. I hope 2K provides updates as they have promised and that the patches for a few negligible, but game affecting, glitches (such as stepping out of bounds, and the team crowding on occasion) come out soon enough.
Kudos to 2K for not forgetting the PC audience and for using Steam. EA has their own digital game distribution service (Origin) and I wouldn't dare install that nonsense on my machine to BUY substandard games... Thanks again, 2K!
...
PS - On a side note: Hopefully 2K can make an NCAA football game in the coming year for PC. That would be awesome and well embraced!
PPS - In explanation of the title of this review: I am moving from console to PC and this is the first game that I used to play on console that I now can play on my PC. I downgraded my video card from an ATI/AMD HD6870 because of the fan (noise and maintenance) to an ATI/AMD HD7750 (fanless), and am still playing my games in an amazing way...so you don't need State of the Art to get this done...the graphics still surpass the PS3... Thinking of totally skipping the PS4 once I buy another joystick...
PPPS - For those who care about the joystick performance: Wireless...feels more durable than any previous PS3 purchases...performs wonderfully...looking forward to buying another so that I can play with my fiancee...
A few examples of what I've encountered in my MyPlayer mode:
AI trades made puts one team with 5 point guards and 1 center (Nets)
Chemistry is very slow in going up, but very quick in going down--even with the best record in the league and a 12-game win streak, there was only a 1% gain in chemistry
While in game, the AI controlling the point guard changes play every few seconds in offense, resulting in last second shots far outside the 3-point line
AI controlling ball-handler will not pass the ball when I am running to the basket with an open lane, but will pass the ball when I'm running to the basket (without calling for the ball), with defenders around, resulting in a turn-over
AI will randomly pass inbound to no one resulting in a turn-over
And plenty more...
All in all, it's still a great experience, only if not for those small snags.
