Amazon advertised this as a FREE app. But in the fine print it tells you that most content is only available if you have a TV service provider. HELLO Amazon...you are my tv provider! If I had another provider then I would not need Fire TV or the app. A warning to others the app only works if you have cable or satellite service. USELESS.
I have Comcast service. I installed this app on my Fire TV; it gave me an activation code; I went back to my computer, went to the URL shown on the Fire TV screen, and entered the activation code; the NBC activation site said "Success -- Congratulations, you've successfully activated your device and can now watch NBC Sports." So I went back to the Fire TV, but every time I try to watch something with this app it gives me an error message saying that the channel isn't included in my subscription. Ridiculous! This is the basic NBC channel; it's included in all Comcast cable packages (Comcast owns NBC). If I go to Comcast's website and login, I can get the live feed, so I'm pretty sure this is an activation problem, not a subscription problem. On top of all this, the error message on the Fire TV screen (the one saying the channel isn't included in my subscription) says to go to a URL that doesn't seem to exist. Amazon Fire TV has been featuring this on my home screen, and I understand that Comcast paid $12B for the current and upcoming Olympics ... and they can't get the activation to work right? C'mon!!
It's too bad that the people at the NHL and NBC Sports have not figured out that customers are trying to use these apps because they have cut their cables. Many customers, like myself, are tired of paying large bills for unwatched stations while cable prices continue to climb. I am a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan and wanted to watch the post season games, but the NHL and stations like NBC will only grant access to the games if customers provide their cable company information. If these stations don't catch on soon, they will get left behind, like newspapers and video rental companies The Internet has changed everything. NBC can either adapt or become irrelevant. More and more people are cutting their cable connections. If NBC wants to have customers, then it needs to grant people access to the games who don't have cable. I deleted the NBC app from all of my devices. Hopefully, Root Sports or the NHL will come through for fans. Then NBC will be a distant memory, like Block Busters.
This app suffers for a couple main reasons: In the individual clips you watch, the fast forward and reverse are unreliable. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Also, it is a bummer that you have to sign in with your cable account to see all the coverage... and then you still have to watch their commercials anyway. It is stupid they talk up their on-line coverage, but then you can't get it without a cable account.
The NBC sports app is a huge improvement over the prime-time coverage, but the app still needs work. It can be difficult to navigate among events; the olympics ended up being a single string of several thousand individual events, with no search option, and a paucity of informative labeling. To recognize the individual sports you had to identify the thumbnail image -- there was no accompanying text describing the event. Playback was generally good, with nice high resolution imagery, but from time to time the feed would fail or compression artifacts would interfere. I don't have any trouble with this streaming most video, so I have to assume it is the app or (more likely) the back-side server. There is no option to watch an event part way and then return to it at the same point, and searching and scrolling functions are awkward. Still, despite these problems, this is how I chose to watch the Olympics; the prime time broadcast is dead to me.
I loaded this app onto my Amazon FireTV stick and I am watching Sunday night NFL football live on a 11 ½ foot diagonal screen. The video and sound quality are excellent. Unfortunately when commercials are playing, sometimes NBC blanks the screen with a spinning wheel. The football game does not start playing again when the commercials are over. It forces me to back out of the game and start it again and then the picture is perfect. Doing this though is frustrating.
When I opened the app I was asked to log into the provided address and activate the streaming service by entering my device type, the access code shown on the screen and my cable TV provider. I use ATT U-verse as my cable network. I was instantly connected with the message that my service had been activated and I the game that was coming on which was the Sunday Night NFL football game. Two weeks later is asked me to register with my cable provider again. Why?
I am now watching the NFL game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers. This is a good app but it has some performance issues. How can the game broadcast be perfect HD quality but NBC doesn't want to show the commercials and it messes up the broadcast. If this issue was fixed the app would be a 5 star app but as it is I rated it 3 stars. I can watch the game but I have to survive the commercial streaming issues
If I could give it no stars I would. Totally USELESS, unless you have a cable/satellite subscription. I have the amazon five tv stick and amazon prime membership to avoid the expensive and crooked cable companies! This is just another greedy networks way of trying to stop us all from dumping cable. Well get wise networks and amazon we would rather pay per channel than pay for all the crap we don't watch anyway so perhaps you should invest in bettet streaming choices than in your buddies cable and satellite. No worries though they can keep playing their games and I will just keep not watching :)
