For that, a good set of headphones is invaluable. I have tried many types/brands in the last 10 years of doing this work. I bought these on a whim when I needed a second pair for my scoping work while at the cabin. I could not be more pleased or more surprised in how well they have functioned. So much so, in fact, that I bought this second pair to replace a high end set of Philips noise cancelling headphones.
The volume control is so very helpful to me. I use the headphones in conjunction with a Boostaroo Revolution and achieve great results.
Now, how are they for audiophile usage? Don't know. Although I am also a professional musician, I have not used them for listening to music. Actually putting on headphones and listening to music, for me, is sort of like a Busman's Holiday, so I avoid that :)
All in all, I am well pleased with these headphones. One major point for me is being able to wear them for v-e-r-y long periods of time without any ear pain, resultant headaches, or just the feeling that I want to rip them off of my head -- believe me, some headphones are like that when you wear them for hours and hours.
I cannot comment on their longevity. This is my second pair. My first pair I have had for about 6 months with no problems.
I have two complaints with these headphones, the first is that they don't seem very durable (but I guess that's what the hard case is for). The other complaint I have with these headphones is that when air is rushing over them (like an airplane air vent) it makes a faint pulsing sound.
The volume control on these headphones is a must, and when I was researching headphones I couldn't believe how many headphones didn't have a volume control.
Now possibly the most important part of these headphones, the noise cancelling. Since these are circumaural headphones they block out a lot of noise just by putting them on, and when you turn on the noise cancelling it gets even better. The noise cancelling on these headphones are definitely as good as any I've ever owned.
I'd definitely recommend these headphones to anyone not looking to shell out a big lump of cash, also get these white ones if it doesn't bother you not having black, because for some reason they are 20-30 bucks cheaper...
Hope it helps!
I can't wait to try them on a plane. I will update my review after my travel.
UPDATE 2-3-2012: I finally got a chance to use them on a 5.5hr flight and they were fantastic. With no audio, just switching them on brought that loud roar to a low level and comfortable sound. When plugged into music, all I heard was the clean clear music. No engine roar, no conversations, no PA announcements, nothing but the music. On my return flight I plugged my headphones into the armrest dual audio jack using the supplied adapter. It made the in flight movie enjoyable because all I heard the movie, in stereo and without all the background noise.
I couldn't be happier with this purchase. There were people who sat around me wearing Bose On Ear and Beats headphones. I'm sure those brands are awesome. But I'll take my $55 Able Planets over those $200-$400 brands any day. I'm not an audio mixer or pro dj working in some studio. I'm just a guy that wants a quality headphone that delivers clear audio when listening to music or watching a movie while cancelling out any background noise. If you are looking for the same; look no further.
I am still pleased with this purchase and just used the noise cancelling function while our roof was being worked on. Generator and machinery noise was reduced to a workable level. I also use these with our vacuum cleaner and floor steam cleaner, and I still take them on flights. They are still in great working condition. Good value!
