"NCIS: Los Angeles", a younger, hipper version of the original, took a little while to find its footing. Its early selling point was the wonderful buddy team chemistry of special agents G. Callen and Sam Hanna, played with zest by Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J. Their verbal sparring and collaboration is a highlight of the show.
The team roster took awhile to settle. The increasing prominence given Linda Hunt as eccentric Operations Manager Hetty Lange provided balance and wry humor. Daniela Ruah as field agent Kensi Blye quickly established her street credentials; the show was challenged to find her a suitable partner. That partner is likely to be LA undercover cop Marty Deeks, who did a guest stint and will return for Season Two. Barrett Foa as computer geek Eric Beal and Peter Cambor as psychologist Nate Getz provided superb backup.
The first season episodes pitted the team against terrorists, gun smugglers, spies and assorted bad guys, while managing to combine action, humor, and a little soul-searching. Along the way, one agent was kidnapped and killed and others were placed at risk, while viewers were introduced to the mystery of G. Callen's origins. Rocky Carroll as NCIS Director Vance and Pauley Perrette as forensic investigator Abby Scuto did nice crossovers from NCIS.
"NCIS: Los Angeles - The First Season" is highly recommended to fans of NCIS who might be looking for a different take in a different town.
I've only every seen Chris O'Donnell in Greys Anatomy, and only heard of LL Cool J, Danielle Ruah, etc. as part of the series. But they top off an amazing series that I surprisingly prefer to the original!
Although I love the witty banter of the Gibbs team, the upbeat comedy they integrate into the LA series (particular Sam and G!) cracks me upp time after time. Nate brings a whole new characteristic to NCIS, where profiling suspects is lacked in the original seriesm whilst Hetty provides a mothering comic relief to the series. Dom, Kensi and Eric also appear frequently, and add a new dimension the original series does not. You may grow tired of just the Gibbs team, but the other agents provide a refreshing new outlook. It also manages to integrate well with the original, frequently including Abby and Vance.
Overall, aside from being a crime procedural, it brightens the atmosphere more so than its original. The cases (especially 1x07) do not disappoint, and needless to say, I've watched my digital episodes over and over. It's my most watched program (almost everyday!), and surprises me with excellent quality. The DVD should be no disappointment!
Which is why I had to get this set, especially since NCIS: LA looked awesome on CBS HD. Let me tell you, this Blu-Ray trounces the HDTV showings. While the HDTV sometimes had blocking on fast action, there was none of that for the Blu. It did the near impossible and looked better than the strong HDTV showing. It also sounded great, though the audio in some scenes does sometimes seem a little lower than other scenes. All in all, great for the eyes and the ears.
I enjoyed the special features, despite them only being in standard definition. The info they provided about the show was really good and shows what the cast and crew are thinking, like how a set relates to a character, how they interact, and how they film for the OPS scenes. My only gripe is that they mention the original NCIS multiple times, but the closest to them showing original NCIS were clips of the original stars guest starring on LA. My favorite extras are 'Inside the Ops Center' and 'Lights...Cameras...ACTION'...Read more ›
