Editorial Reviews

CBS Records will release NCIS: The Official TV Score Music by Brian Kirk on Tuesday, March 29.

Instead of merely compiling brief snippets of musical cues -- the norm for most score soundtracks -- NCIS composer Brian Kirk created each of the album's 14 tracks by mixing various musical pieces from the show's episodes into standalone suites of music. The resulting album provides the listener with a unique and immersive audio experience, presenting the NCIS music in a cohesive format designed to be listened to as fans would any of their favorite albums.

This first score soundtrack from the worldwide hit television series follows two previous hit NCIS soundtracks that compiled songs featured in the show during its first seven seasons many of them previously unreleased and exclusive to those albums. As a bonus for the show's fans, NCIS: The Official TV Score also features a 15th track: the first commercial release of the ''NCIS Main Theme'' that has opened each series episode for the past eight seasons.

In addition to the contributions of his longtime musical collaborators, Greg Burns and Jeff Burns, Kirk cites the show's fans as an important influence on NCIS: The Official TV Score. ''Oh, they were definitely in the room with us; we absolutely set out to do something different and create an album worthy of the fans devotion to the show. So if people like the way we've presented the NCIS music on this album, the show s fans should share a lot of the credit.''

As composer for NCIS for the past six seasons, Brian Kirk has written and produced more than 60 hours of music for the series. Having to choose one album's worth of music from among those hours of material all of it having been integral to the series episodes was a daunting task for Kirk, to say the least.

While Kirk's process begins with expanding upon musical elements that he has created and developed over the course of six seasons, there are myriad other pieces that need to be created during a given episode. As Kirk explains, ''There are seven characters on the show that make up the NCIS team, and we've developed a musical signature for each one, all of which can take on many forms, he said. We certainly wanted those signatures properly represented on the album, but then there are other musical elements that are meant to convey or enhance the emotion of a particular scene.'' In short, Kirk had quite a lot of music to choose from as he worked toward creating a meaningful representation of the show's musical score.

As NCIS Executive Producer Shane Brennan explains, ''Brian s challenge is compounded by the fact that while the show is built on a dramatic structure, there are also the lighter, more comedic moments that make our show different from other crime-solving dramas. Brian s music is instrumental in helping to create this distinct nature of the show, and in bringing the audience along for that ride without jarring them.''

This is an awesome CD for any NCIS fan! I like that it has a good mix of scores, not just from past seasons, but from the current season as well. I really like Double-o DiNozzo. It captures the essence of the character (mostly upbeat, but serious at times), and I'm thrilled they put in the theme song. It'll make a great ringtone. Listening to this reminds me how important scores are for TV shows/film. Without them, the scenes wouldn't evoke the different emotions experienced when watching.

As a late coming fan to the series need I say I LOVE this CD? (As of note I have purchased all 7 seasons through here and have seen EVERY single episode, some more than others).

I am not into "scores" per se as most of the instrumental music puts me to sleep even after 12 hours of sleep. This one is different. I can either wake up to this after a great night's sleep, or fall asleep with this one when insomnia kicks in (and it assures a great night's sleep). The music is that great.

The cover features each one of the agents/forensics team we have come to know and love. There is also the great "theme" at the end of the CD that kick-starts each episode. There are so many great tracks on this CD, it's hard to have a "standout" favorite, so here are a few of my "favorite" tracks...

#1--"My Boss Is A Sniper/Gibb's Rules" kick-starts this CD (this one starts off with quite a bit of action, then tones down; very beautiful)

#2--"Tony and Ziva Undercovers" brings back the fondness of the episode, as well as Tony and Ziva working together undercover for the first time I believe (if I am wrong I will go back an edit this, lol)

#4--"Enemies Foreign and Domestic" which is from the current season, so it is a real treat. This was a great look into Vance's past as well as Ziva's father "Eli".

#5--"Double O-DiNozzo" captures one of my favorite characters. He's serious when he needs to be, quirky, charming, and quite the clown, which we know is a façade. His personality is who he is, along with the other characters. This particular piece captures the agent's personality, while telling a story.

#6--"Aliyah" is a piece I am quite fond of.

I have been a long time fan of film and television soundtracks, but was a little wary of how Kirk would pull this one off, given the length of the NCIS show, meaning that he would have hours upon hours of scored material, but in small snippets. However, he managed to craft some very well-done tracks that are both fluid and evocative. Each track is masterfully done and really exceeded my expectations.

My favorite tracks are:

Alliyah
My Boss Is a Sniper/Gibb's Rules
Tony and Ziva Under Covers
DiNozzo Take McGee

Highly recommended and all the tracks are wonderful! This is one of my favorite soundtracks, which I feel like is saying a lot. 5/5 stars.

From listening to the previews, I can think back and remember many of the scenes these songs are from. I really like "Double-O DiNozzo" and "Abby in Wonderland" gives me chills because it's at that point she questions Gibbs about his past. Overall, a must have for NCIS fans!

I've never purchased the score for a movie or tv show before. Being a huge NCIS fan, I bought this on a whim. Wow! It's the music I listen to almost every day. I have both the CD for playing in my office, and the mp3 I play when I walk every day. It's amazing how Brian Kirk keeps a theme and style of music while making each selection so different. My favorites are "My Boss Is a Sniper/Gibbs' Rules", "Aliyah", and "Gibbs in the Heartland". But make no mistake, every selection is truly awesome! Great job, Brian Kirk!

When I first heard the samples on the website, NCISmusic.com, I knew I had to get this CD. One of my favorite tunes is "Aliyah", and I am constantly reminded of what happened when this beautiful piece was played. The CD itself is awesome too, but "Aliyah" is my favorite. It's worth ordering.

This is some of the best easy-listening music that I can find anywhere. Definitely worth buying. Some tracks are upbeat and bring a smile to my face. Other tracks sound more somber. It's great for my commutes to and from work.

When I heard about the score from NCIS, it was 2 years after the release. It was tough to find..even when I zeroed in on it, I had one seller over( on that sister site) refund the money b/c he didn't have any more and one strikeout here on Amazon. Third time's the charm. Worth every penny and every moment of the search!
