I love my Bumblebee microphone....starting with the amazingly designed website which was easy to navigate and informative, allowing me to choose exactly the microphone that was best for me. Loved the innovative packaging, one cord set up and outstanding sound quality. This is by far the best microphone I have purchased. If you do any kind of recording, streaming, podcasting or conference calls people will think you are actually there with them the sound quality is so good.
I needed a desktop microphone for recording operatic singing and also speaking. Most lower cost mics have weird cutoffs and dead ranges but this one holds up very well. It handles loud singing without distortion. The Bumblebee has three profiles for voice, neutral, and music. I used it in the neutral setting for singing. Voice compresses the upper range which I didn't like but I think many people are used to hearing so they think that's a normal thing. Music setting made things a bit more bass heavy which probably sounds good with certain instruments but not for voice. The adjustable gain and headphones volume knobs are cute looking but a little weird feeling. They get the job done though. The snap on pop filter is a nice touch along with the articulating arm.
I would recommend this USB microphone if you want much better than average quality, ease of use, and something fun looking.
Needed to get a better microphone for hosting zoom meetings at work. So glad I got "The Bumblebee” I have only used it it "voice" mode, but it works perfectly. I like the fact that it has a solid base with volume controls. Easy to use headphone jack at front of the base, with volume control for headphone. I can run a mini fan on my desk without the mic picking it up as background noise. Great for the basic, everyday computer user. Professional Vloggers and Musicians may need a more expensive mic for whatever reason, but for me, this microphone is top of the line. The clever and artistic packaging and pamphlets are just the extra icing, on an already fabulous cake.
Granted this mic model is 5+ years old however the tech on these mics has not changed, is proven, and the build quality is superb (I got the Bumblebee) a tremendous value at half its original price. The condenser in these mics are larger than most and the controls work very well. It is not small, it's heavy build, but you can count on it. My only complaint is the articulation could have a larger range of motion or mic positions however that's minor. I considered buying the model with 4 condensers but no need to after working with the Bumblebee. Buy this if you want a solid, good, mic for work or play.
So as a microphone junkie I was immediately interested in this product even though it is so ugly and I couldn't find a review anywhere on the web for it, I pulled the trigger and here we are. I wanted something I could hand to my wife for podcast and keep her out of my expensive mic locker. The requirements were quality and ease of use for a non technical person. Now after purchasing this I am very pleased that I did and hope they can fix their terrible marketing and make this a mainstay product. Below you will find the tests performed to stack this up to real world use.
1- Deep Male Voiceover- The music mode sounded fine and was mildly colored in the middle and high range. It sounded very good and crisp and was an accurate representation of my voice even at fast talking speed. The neutral was even more accurate and not muddy anywhere at all. The "voice" mode sounded overly tinny and extremely hot. It was unusable on this setting with my voice.
Testing against another persons ear they couldn't tell the difference between an SM7B on a handmade preamp that is slightly colored vs. the bumble bee.
2- Accoustic jam session- I put this on the floor facing up in between a guitarist and singer and recorded. In all three modes they were clear, crisp and audible. The voice mode was too hot and made the recording unnecessarily bright and strange. It was like a hypercardioid on a really hot pre (I don't have a better way to explain it). when listening against the same recording on a Neuman KM 84 mic through a UAD LA 610 it was obviously different but it was still an accurate representation of the sound.
3- Vocals in a fixed room- I found the sweet spot for me is a second pop filter and 6 inches of distance on neutral mode with an EQ plugin. I was able to create very accurate vocal representations which surprised me pleasantly. Being you have to sit to record from this and I don't think it was really intended as a vocal mic.
4- Skype calls- It handled it admirably and I was crystal clear to the called party. I did not test this using any other setup, just wanted to see how well it worked. Neutral mode worked best for this and again the voice mode was way too hot.
Thoughts- The device sounds really very good for a $200 device. It has a place in my routine for both my wife and myself. I could easily use this in an untreated room for a scratchpad device and get an accurate representation of the sound. It captures bottom, mid and high ranges all in great regards for what it is. It packs down stupid small and I can carry this around in a small Nanuk case for voice over work while traveling. Will it replace high end mics, not at all. Can it bring a nice sound to voiceover and podcasting, absolutely.
The quality of the build is actually much better than I was expecting it to be. It is entirely constructed of metal with kind of a texturized industrial powder coat. The base is solid and this thing is planted. It (boom arm) moves with only a slight bit of friction and I would like to have seen tension screw where it does pivot so if this thing ever gets loose we can tighten it up easily. The mode knob, Gain and headphone knobs are cool looking and turn very fluid, they also light up in a warm amber color so in a dark room you don't fumble.
Also worth note- Even when turning the knobs during a hot recording it didn't pick it up in the mic like it did my key strokes on my mac.
While generally I don't trust modern Gibson products and this is a Gibson brand they got this product right. I can deal with the dumb bee theme and could even disassemble and cerakote this thing if it ever drives me too crazy. At $200 for this you cant lose so its an easy purchase. I will actually purchase more of their products due to the quality of this one and look forward to the Beestro for a solid voice over device. I tested this on a mac and windows machines both of them recognized it without issue and I bridged it into Presonus on both machines with 0 issues. This is a great device and I wish them longevity and to correct their marketing strategy. I don't know what bees have to do with microphones or four really old guys for that matter, but this is a good product.
The item came very handsomely packed. The mic is beautifully designed. It has a nice heft, every detail feels expensive and well built. The knobs don't feel cheap or plasticky. That said, the indicator on the knob could be clearer. Perhaps a contrasting color or illuminated dial would make it easier to see. Sound quality is on par with higher end USB mics. I like the quality of the EQ baked into the presets. Mic is instantly recognized on the mac, all you need to do is select Bumblebee for your Sound input device. It also shows up on FaceTime, Zoom etc.
I love this microphone. Well made, easy to use, way cool look and feel. My voice sounds great and I am very happy with my purchase. So worth the money in my opinion.
This mic was used maybe 20 times and the volume when listening thru the headphone jack built into the Bumblebee failed. The volume is very low and, as such, this product is now unusable. The computer settings were checked to ensure that wasn't the issue. Took product to Best Buy and they tested it and agreed the product was faulty. They didn't have any decent mics to sell me so telling me that it was faulty wasn't a sales tactic. There is no way to contact the seller via Amazon and I see that another reviewer had the same issue and the seller will not respond to him and that the 3 year warranty is a "sham."
I have had this for over a year and half and it is still working great.
Amazing sound and high quality build. The engineers behind this were ex-Blue Yeti and their expertise is underappreciated, especially considering the price
Edit: After over 3 years of owning this product, it is still functioning amazingly well and I have never been happier with a purchase. I just want to show my appreciation to the makers :)
Great mic at a great price. Looks awesome, 14 year old son loves it and we all know how picky they are, especially as it's not the one he requested but he is over the moon with it. Nice and heavy so you don't need to worry about it being knocked off/about, gives a really good sound to you voice, very professional sounding. Would definitely buy again.
