The Retro Entertainment System, or RES, does a decent job of playing NES games. The only real setback is the cleanliness of the cartridges themselves. Be sure to clean your old games THOROUGHLY with a Q-Tip before using them with the RES. If you insert games with grime and dust on the contacts, it can enter the RES itself and cause problems for other games. (see below)

The main goal of the RES itself is to play your old NES games presumably BETTER than on the original system.
This is true for several reasons:
-The system is brand new with no wear and tear from years of use.
-It loads all games from the top, not the front, eliminating the problem of the game not making contact to the system properly.
-The video-out problem with scan lines appearing on the old system are not present on the RES.
-The system itself is much smaller than the original NES and considerably lighter. It's roughly 5" x 1.5" x 5" at around 0.5 LBS (An NES cartridge is slightly longer than the actual system).

The first game I tried (Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt) worked immediately with no problem. However, when I started trying some dustier games, they required some additional cleaning before working.

Like said before, if your games are too dirty, they can dirty up the RES as well. The same Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt cartridge I used at first stopped working later on after playing numerous other titles, and required some fidgeting.

But don't be alarmed with games just not starting up, some deep cleaning of the cartridge contacts (even with heavy chemicals, going against Nintendo's wishes, if it is giving serious problems) may be necessary.
Always remember, the original NES had it way worse and it was both the console and the cartridge at fault.

It's a cheap NES knock off. It does exactly that. The color and audio are very slightly off, the cartridges are also a little hard to get in and out at first. The plastic is cheap, the controllers are functional but mushy (was able to play Mario 3 without issues)... but it works.

Reasons to get it:
If you need a secondary NES for kids/special needs individuals (like I did)
If you need/want a temporary system while you look for a better model (or to get your old system repaired)
If you need/want a secondary system for another room but don't want to spend money on a possibly bad used system.
If you didn't grow up with the NES but wanted to try out some games before you invest in more pricey solutions.

Reasons to not get it:
If you grew up, loved your NES and you want this as a permanent replacement for your NES. (I'd expect the average lifespan on this thing is a year or two)
If you want a pixel perfect recreation of your system (sound and graphics are slightly off)
If you want perfect controllers. (these are decent, but the D-pad is a single piece of plastic and feels a bit mushy, especially on the all important "right" direction)

Never forget, the NES was $299 for the deluxe version that launched in the US. This (as of writing) is 15. Adjusted for inflation you'd literally paying pennies on the dollar for a similar but not perfect experience... Don't expect perfection and you won't be disappointed with this product.

Worked as intended, right of the box. Popped in Mike Tyson's Punch Out and started wooping up on Glass Jaw Joe in minutes.

I was a little worried about the price but this little thing is compact and does exactly what it's intended to do...plays NES games. I don't have a huge library but it plays the ones I have and the kids love the retro games!

Biggest piece of junk ever made. I tried all my games in this thing and none of them worked. All I got was a blue screen on my tv. I even tried my own AV cables. Also once you put the game in it was hard to get the game out. I was afraid I was going to break it.

If you believe that you will be getting a unit made of the same type of durable plastic that was used in the 1980's, you're going to be let down. If you are expecting it to feel substantial when you handle it like the original NES console did, you're going to be disappointed. The only purpose of this little machine is to allow you to play your NES cartridges. Some of them are not very playable on this unit, for example, I can't get Rad Racer II to give me a nice, clean screen. Paperboy looks a little rough and the sound on Wheel of Fortune is awful.

This console did, however, cause me to clean all my cartridges and wiggle them around a LOT in the slot trying to get them to work. So far, I've got 8 out of 9 cartridges to at least play, even with messed up graphics.

It feels very light weight, which doesn't bother me as I know electronics have become extremely minimized since the 80's, so don't let that part bother you when you find yourself holding down the unit to pull out the cartridge.

Seriously, the issue with this thing is that it is VERY sensitive. VERY! Once I finally get a game to play, a bump on the floor or an accidental tug on the control cable sometimes causes the game to malfunction which is a problem when the kids and I are playing together and our 3 cats and 2 dogs want to be with the family. Just to keep it real, your kids will struggle with getting used to a wired controller so the tugging thing happens more than you'd think.
