I wanted to upgrade my home network from a 10M/sec hub built into my router to a 100M/sec switch. I probably could have gotten by with an 8 port product, but I've wired up a few outlets to a patch panel and didn't want to have to walk to the basement and patch around as I moved around the house. This 16 port version seemed like a good way to go.
The product is very different styling than other Netgear products I have (not that I cared). It is small, not a much larger profile than the plugs themselves need, and the case is very sturdy and solid. With no fans, it makes no noise. My only negative comment is I would have preferred a standard 19 inch width for rack mounting, but others will prefer this more condense case. Fits on a shelf easy, or you could mount it to the wall with screws on the underside.
And the end result -- much faster home network! This would be a good solution for anyone with a larger home or small office wired network, or someone who hosts LAN parties. 16 ports will connect a lot of people!

I purchased one NETGEAR FS116 as a central switch in parallel with a 12-port network punch-down panel in our newly constructed home. Excellent price, no-brainer set-up, and so far, excellent performance.

I set up the new switch with a dozen 2-foot Cat5e patch cables, attaching the switch to my utility panel with the provided mounting screws, plugged the unit in, and I was up and running in about 10 minutes total time. As a survivor of the early days of PC networking, it's hard to imagine that things have become this easy and this affordable.

This is a GREAT switch for starters! I have a DLINK Gamers router and a lot of devices that needed to be connected to my network (2 Direct HD DVR TV boxes, 2 Comcast HD DVR boxes, PS3, Blue Ray Disc Player and 2 laptops). Everything is now hard wired and working like a charm. It also leaves me room for expansion in the future, need to always think ahead. I have Comcast internet service DOSCIS 3.0 and this switch works awesome! I am not a wireless fan and looked for a while to purchase an affordable switch. Thanks to Amazon and a [...] rebate from Netgear you can't go wrong. I purchased all my network cables from [...].

Solid performing switch for small business and home networks.

My only complaint is there is no easy way to mount it inside a patch panel. I wish it came with a mounting kit that plugged into a patch panel. Instead, I had to screw holes into the sheet metal of the panel and 'hang' the switch on the screw heads.

I purchased this switch for a network clean up and expansion. I took it out of the box, plugged the power in and plugged in all the cables from the old installation. Everything worked perfectly.

The switch has now been relocated to the building addition and it is supporting all the ports in the network with some spare capacity left.

Highly recommended: easy and simple to use.

I bought this after my TRENDNET switch decided to die on me, and as far as I'm concerned you get what you pay for! This thing is absolutely amazing, its decently priced and you know its good quality. I have a lot of wired devices around my apartment that need lots of connections so I decided to purchase this instead of a couple of five or eight port switches. This thing doesn't drop at all, so you're not going to have to worry about the switch dropping on your in the middle of a game or anything like that.

I've talked to others that this unit worked for, but I had terrible luck with it. There are no instructions included, so I wasnt sure which port controlled the ethernet. I tried several configurations, and it would work fine as its own LAN, but never played well with my domain. It was a networking nightmare to diagnose what was wrong. It also killed 3 ethernet wall jacks. All 3 worked fine until I used them to connect this switch. I would plug it in to try to get internet for PCs connected to the switch, and they would have no internet. So then I retest wall jack, and its dead. Move to new jack, same result. After the 3rd attempt, I boxed it up and sent it back! Bought a basic Cisco fast ethernet switch and it works like a champ.

I've always been a fan of the Netgear FS series of switches. The metal enclosure is certainly sturdier than many competitor's toy-like plastic cases. And like most Netgear products, it works out of the box and just keeps working.

I've worked with a lot of these switches over the last few years at home an at work, and not one has failed in any way. (Okay, one switch ended up with a few bad ports after a very nearby lightning strike, but I can hardly blame that on the device.)

If you're looking for a 5-port, 8-port, 16-port or 24-port Fast Ethernet or Gigabit switch, get a Netgear!

Excellent product and well worth the money. Provides the same quality of service as other much more expensive switching gear on the market. Possibly could be improved by adding mounting bracket as an option. Having 12 lines on desk surface is cumbersome. Great product very happy with results.
