Asus not only made my last router, but has been a brand I have liked and trusted in the pc space for years anyway, plus some review sites had this one listed as a great gaming router so figured price tag is a bit high but what the heck?
Well it may be a little high for a router, but it is worth it. The router was well packaged, it came with all the instructions you need, info on how to download the configuration app etc. The app by the way worked extremely well and was so straight forward I could find every setting I wanted just by messing with it for about 2 minutes. It is also a great way to monitor live network traffic and connected devices, I like.
Also you can of course still access it without the app through a connected device and web browsing, just be aware the router is also at a non standard ip address if you choose to use this method. I also appreciate that non standard IP from a security perspective.
Some things to note. You have to manually turn on AX mode, since this is a newer standard it is off by default to insure greater device compatibility. You also need to force split networks if you need a 2.4 and 5 ghz network running. My personal favorite setting.... hidden network SSID also needs to be manually enabled. Once that is done you will need to reconnect your device using the app to wifi again since the network will no longer be found automatically once hidden.
I really have no complaints with this thing. The antennas are well made, attach securely, are actually thicker at the connection pin than my old router even. Wifi signal on my PS5 used to be 85-90% plenty good enough.... now it is 98-100% with the router sitting in the same spot as the old one. It even has better venting in my opinion with good front bottom heat vents, and a ton of venting from the top and back. The power button is also much easier to find and switch, a nice quality of life thing to have.
Really if you are looking for a top shelf router, be it for gaming, streaming, NAS, whatever.... this guy is going to get the job done.
I am very pleased with the purchase and also the fact that it was simple and expanded my setups even more than I thought it would. It turned out to be like extra icing on an already flavorful cake! Some of the reviews and information had me to believe that it wasn't going to work for what I wanted it to, or even be extremely complicated to figure out. Not at all, it was really a "plug and play" kind of deal. Definitely have to personally give this Netgear 5-port Giga-switch 2 thumbs up, or as on here, 5 stars most definitely!
Thankfully some simple trouble shooting by plugging the ethernet FROM the router that would go to the switch INTO a laptop let me know the switch was at fault. Once plugged directly into the laptop, internet (via ethernet) was online, surpisingly the internet (via wifi) was online as well. This meant internet signal ceased to exist at the router when the switch was connected via ethernet.
Anyways, should you encounter issues after a power surge, save some time, try the above steps. Thankfully the price of the switch is reasonable.

Any Gigabit switch can do that job though. But with a managed switch, I can put the regular route and the modem onto one vlan, and the guest router and the (same) modem onto another separate vlan, for guaranteed separation. I'm very technical, but LAN security is new to me, and using vlan isolation provides some extra confidence for now. This all works just fine.
The only complaint, echoing an earlier reviewer, is that there's no setting in the GUI to assign the management (web) interface to a specific vlan. So all vlans have access to the management interface. Let's just hope that a strong password is enough to keep it secure!
Otherwise, this is a good, sturdy feeling 5-port gigabit switch, in a full metal jacket, that costs only slightly more than an unmanaged switch. The management feature will be useful here in the future for cable fault testing, and especially for the port-mirroring feature (needed when monitoring a device with WireShark).
Time will tell, but decent enough for the job, and especially for the price!
This is a no nonsense Gigabit Switch with a metal housing. It can be used on a shelf, desktop or wall mounted using the slots on the back of the switch.
Set up is quick and easy - Plug N Play. Just plug the power adapter into the wall outlet and your network cables into the switch. There is no software needed and no firmware to update. Speeds are up to 1000mbps using Cat6 cabling.
I prefer the LED Lights on the Netgear 5 & 8 port switches compared to the TP-Link and some others. The LEDs are easier to read so it's easier to spot an issue on a specific port.
Overall all four brands of switches I mentioned are good however Netgear continues to be the one I choose most often if the price is the same or similar.
So I ended up fashioning a USB to barrel power plug cable using an old USB cable and the power cord that came with this switch.
I have plenty of available USB ports in my Home Theatre set up and any one of them can power this switch. In fact I first tested that this method would work using a power bank and even that was able to power the switch and allowed it to transmit at full speed.
I currently have 4 ports populated with 1000mbps going to each port.
Its been stable so far and the metal chassis is relatively cool.
Glad the labeled input on the switch was correct and that my experiment ended up working out!
I would recommend this switch!

One minor quibble; not being overly technical, I didn't know that I could plug the input cable into any port, and the manual was silent on that issue. When I went to an online forum (not Netgear) to ask, I got a snarky reply to the effect that the solution was obvious, so I should have known. The whole point of my going online to ask was that I didn't know.
