The Powerline series of outlet network connectivity is pretty nifty. The instructions are as clear as daylight. I bought two pair of these so that I could extend my network in my new home until I can have network equipment and drops installed. I had the cable technicians deliver a cable feed to my basement where I planned to install all of networking for the home. The cable tech said that Wi-Fi would not cover the house from this location but I told him I had other plans. After I confirmed cable internet connectivity, I proceeded to install these guys. My house is an older 1970 tri-level that features aluminum wiring (wired at sockets/switches using AlumiCon 3-way connectors - if this is relevant). Much to my surprise, the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 actually DOES cover the entire house while being located in the basement sitting on a wire rack (temporary placement). Even though I was only two rooms away, I thought I'd try a Powerline from the utility room to my office.Latency and throughput were tested using public sites such as speedtest.net for both a Powerline and a Wi-Fi AC connection. I also tested using another laptop connected directly to the cable modem. In Powerline tests, it should be noted that my configuration resembles the following:Utility Room Outlet > Powerline +Outlet Device > port on Netgear Nighthawk R7000 > Cable ModemIn rooms where laptops were tested using Powerline Device:Laptop (1Gbe) > Powerline +Outlet Device > OutletResults of my tests:1. Laptop 1 direct to cable modem = ~175 Mbps, 1ms ping2. Laptop 2 connected via Wi-Fi AC = ~165 Mbps, 1ms ping3. Laptop 2 connected via Powerline = ~110 Mbps, 5-12ms pingObviously, in this instance, I am sticking with wireless for my office connection. But, my kid brother's room upstairs has sketchy Wi-Fi coverage due to his failing Wi-Fi dongle. So, I stuck a Powerline Device up there and he is getting the zippy results from 3 shown above.Final things to consider, since people have mentioned a few issues:1. Do not plug these devices into power strips. I tested a few power strips (basic to expensive) and they all had the same issues. Basically, the problems seem to be loss of connectivity or downgraded "line speed/quality" (i.e. pick-a-plug LED is red or amber or altogether off). I suspect line filtering, etc, components in some of these things are causing issues (I am not an electrician or an electrical engineer so I don't know - it's just a guess I'd hazard).2. If you enable encryption, definitely don't use power strips. You will observe flaky behavior.3. Encryption does not appear to affect latency or throughput to any appreciable degree.4. Get the +Outlet model. It is solid and better to have the socket available for use than to eat up a whole outlet panel. These units are large and they will basically consume the whole panel except for perhaps two-prong thin cables.5. If you have to reset these devices to their factory default state in order to remove/reset encryption, pressing the Reset button via a paper-clip or SIM card remover tool literally requires just a firm tap. Stick it in and when you feel the button "click" then release. Don't hold it for any period of time.If you're on the fence, don't be. These are a great tool particularly if you don't have the space, time, or money to invest in networking equipment. I have bigger plans for my basement, but I just couldn't execute them before move-in so these turned out to be a great buy!As for those that provided feedback on this device, thanks! Without the reviews I may have never have had the confidence to give these units a shot no matter what I think of Netgear.
