I am so disappointed with this product and NETGEAR support. I will not only be replacing this unit for my home with something from a different manufacturer but the other (2) ReadyNAS devices that I purchased for my company.
This unit was purchased on 09/01/2014 - I didn't receive it for few days, then it took over two days to get the drives formatted and another 4 days to get all my movies, pictures, music, etc,,,loaded (which I was willing to deal with as a "one-time" operation to get it setup) ran fine until shortly after a recent firmware update. Now the unit is stuck on "Booting..." but when I read the warranty and it said it had a 3 year warranty an a 90 day installation warranty. Here is the actual warranty info from Netgear for my unit:
Product Warranty Information
Serial Number: 3EPB44EK000C4
Country of Purchase: United States
Purchased on: 02/Sep/2014
Registered on: 04/Sep/2014
Standard Product Warranty * :
- Hardware Warranty: Available till 01/Sep/2017
- Free Installation Support Warranty: Expired on 01/Dec/2014
- Power Supply Warranty: Available till 01/Sep/2017
- Accessories Warranty: Available till 01/Sep/2017
Advanced Support / Hardware Contracts: None
As you can see only my "Installation Support Warranty" is expired (as of 2 months ago) but according to this everything other than "Installation" is covered until 2017....NOT
Basically I played by the rules, registered my product, followed the instructions and got the unit running fine for 5 months( really..it ran great and I was very happy with it and even recommended it to several friends)...I think my "Installation" was fine. Now there support department wants me to spend money to get assistance and by the sound of it (based on other reviews) they are just going to tell me to do a factory reset, lose all my data, spend 5 days reformatting and moving data back on to it, and wait for it to happen again.
Did I say that I am so disappointed with NETGEAR?
Here's the reply from for my support ticket that I submitted:
Dear Mr. Davidson,
It feels great for us to know that you take interest in our products. We are also pleased to know that they have served you well for all this time.
Your RN10400 comes with the following warranty from the date of purchase:
* 90 days basic technical support
* 3 years Hardware Warranty
Based on the product registration, your device is no longer eligible for free assistance from a support expert as far as the software aspect is concerned. However, I want to make sure you are aware there are other options available for you to utilize such as:
I would also encourage for you to return to the Boot Menu and find out if the device can be set in Tech Support mode. That way we can say for certain that the chassis is still functional.
Aside from the above free options, I highly recommend our OnCall Premium Services which will entitle you to phone support for this issue. For more information, you may visit the ReadyNAS website at http://readynas.com.
Thank you for choosing NETGEAR.

Notice the part about: "your device is no longer eligible for free assistance from a support expert as far as the software aspect is concerned" - I have not installed any software on this machine...only the FIRMWARE update that controls the hardware that is having a problem....Oh yeah...NETGEAR provided the firmware.
As the technician recommended I did get the machine into Tech Support mode but there is no documentation about this (that I could find)...but if I spend more money and pay for support they'll talk to me? UNACCEPTABLE
I'm tired of typing and have spent more time on this problem than a better piece of equipment with proper support is worth.
Now I feel awful for recommending this thing to friends of mine.
I feel like I will never purchase another NETGEAR product for home or business. I can't trust it and I am certainly not remotely satisfied with the support. This is my DATA the whole point of having a redundant drive array is for performance and redundancy so your data is available and protected.
I am going to reply to NETGEAR once more just to give them a chance to make it right (everyone makes a mistake once in awhile and should be offered an opportunity to correct it). I will update my post based on that response.
03/01/2015 - 01:51 AM EST - Update:
Unfortunately I do not have good news....I have not received a reply from NETGEAR support but did go and check their forum and found that the problem I am experiencing is a known issue and it is with the firmware see the thread here that started 11/26/2014 (over 3 months ago..when my "Installation Warranty" was still valid):
This is absolutely horrible. 18 pages of posts about this issue.
NETGEAR, what are you going to do to fix this? Hopefully something other than recommend people do a factory reset, lose their data, and wait for it to happen again. Soooooo disappointed.
I finally ordered a diskless readynas 104 and bought separately 4 WD drives. Installing the drives was easy, maybe a few minutes per drive without even the need for a screw driver. Then I connected the readynas to the power supply and plugged it to my ATT rooter and powered it on. The nas started by updating its firmware, then displayed its IP on the little screen on the front. I entered the IP in my laptop's browser and logged on the nas. The process was super easy. The nas was already creating a Raid 5 partition on my 4 disks -exactly what I wanted. It took the readynas about 36 hours to create the 8 Tera partition (5.2T usable, 2.8T for data redundancy). Once my partition was ready, I started copying my data and configuring the different services. I ended up shutting down most services, keeping only Samba for file sharing between Mac, Windows and Linux. I switched on the resident anti-virus (which updated itself automatically) and configured the readynas remote application to access data from any place with internet, far the comfort of home. I ended up setting up the Itune server and Plex to stream music and movies -just because I can.
I have been using the nas for one week and only scratched the surface of the possibilities here. This is so much more than a storage system, it is really a little server on its own. Particularly the apps open endless possibilities.
There are 2 things that could be better tough: the device can get a bit noisy when the fan is at full speed. Don't plan on installing it in your bedroom. Last the readynas 104 connects to your network though cable only - no wifi.
I still give it 5 stars, because it was a breeze to configure and setup (no frustration as I feared when buying the device) and for the price this is really a ton of technology packed in this little box. My only regret is that maybe I should have bought the bigger 6 bays system!
So the problem went like this: netgear deleted all the cloud accounts from their own servers by mistake, the drives of all the clients synced with their servers and deleted the local username of each user, and the machine then automatically deleted all the content of the share of the users that was stored locally.
I have lost every thing I had because of this. Netgear is trying to 'develop' a tool to restore their client's data using data carving but by their own admission odds of success are very low.
you can read about their announcement of the defect on their community page, I tried pasting a link here but amazon doesn't allow links in their reviews apparently.
