I've spent too much time reading reviews of home security/monitoring cameras trying to figure out which product to buy in order to monitor a vacation home in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Its very hard to find a camera with positive reviews and all the features I'm looking for, lots of pluses but just as many minuses making it tough to choose. So I decided to just take the plunge and ended up purchasing a Foscam FI9821W v2, a Dropcam Pro, and the Netgear Vuezone VZMS2200. I bought all three of these cameras with the intention of keeping them but once I used them I found out the product wasn't going to work for me so I ended up returning one and trying another.

So which camera did I end up keeping? The Netgear Vuezone. Here's why:

-The Foscam software and apps worked well and the picture/video was good. Even with the IR lights turned off at night (which you can do using the app or webpage) with the camera pointing out a window and with just a porch light on the video was quite good. Initial setup and configuration was kind of a pain but not that bad. However, once I went outside of my home network my phone app would no longer work (kind of the whole point of having it!) and more configuration was necessary. At a certain point I got so frustrated I just said to heck with this thing. Foscam really needs to make the setup more user friendly for the general public, so back it went.

-Next up, the Dropcam Pro. By far the best video/picture of the bunch. The lens has a very wide field of view and the video is amazing. Pointing the camera out a window at night and turning off the IR lights hardly mattered, you could still easily see what's going on out there.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Reviewing The Netgear VZSM2200-100NAS is difficult because there are two key components to the system. The first is hardware. The second is the monitoring access service provided via Netgear. However, the Netgear VZSM2200-100NAS represents a viable option in home monitoring and security, regardless of additional costs associated with the service (monitoring plan). Though I consider the cost of the Netgear somewhat high in comparison to similar products, I am not considering this in my review rating but will provide additional notes.

On Hardware

The product hardware is well made, can be used somewhat discreetly, provides great mounting variations, and simply works (for me) out of the box (connecting to a Linksys router). Note: The camera is not weatherproof though Netgear sells a weatherproof housing. The camera is discreet enough as to not draw attention if mounted above line of sight but will definitely be spotted if someone is looking for it unless you camouflage adequately. While the device does not provide audio or infrared (nighttime) viewing capability, the video I acquired (640 x 480 max at 4 fps max) was clear, though a little "jerky," with sufficient natural ambient or artificial light, typically in the 30 watt range (another reviewer noted 40 watts are required). In lower light levels, the signal to noise ratio shows a steep drop. In other words, if you are using the Netgear to monitor your front porch, you will be fine in daylight or at night with the porch light on; conversely, without light, the camera is of no value in my opinion. However, for nighttime viewing, you can set the exposure via the Vuezone control panel. Though this works to some degree, the added step is an annoyance and likely missed by most people.

Hi, J Dassaro -

Thank you for writing such a thorough review and for confirming the easy setup, the 100% wireless cameras, and the adequate camera range in a residence. We do find that small businesses appreciate the value of the system, especially considering that there is no professional installation (and the associated costs that come with that!) However, we also find many home users seeing value in getting motion detection email alerts and live video on their smartphones. Home users have told us they like knowing when kids get home from school, seeing when a package arrives, knowing a loved one at home is OK, or even seeing if the garage door is closed.

Also, for low light situations, we suggest trying the VueZone Night Vision Camera (VZCN2060-100NAS).

Thanks again for your great review and we appreciate you being a NETGEAR customer!

Initial review: I wasn't expecting crystal clear picture quality, but I did expect to be able to recognize faces. Unfortunately you can't with this product. If you only need to be able to monitor your home for basic purposes (check on pet, etc.), it's probably fine, but if you plan to use it for video surveillance, then it's probably not a good pick.

Updated review: All statements above about the quality of the product still apply, plus the fact that it requires specific angles for the motion detection to work and does not work through window due to glare; however, the reason for the update is due to the poor customer service. I signed up for the "premier" service, which is a monthly charge for recorded data. Because I could never get the camera to work as intended, I wanted to cancel the monthly charge (did not select mutli-month option) but there is no online option to cancel the service, the chat service never worked, they never responded to my email, there is no option on the phone system and no one was able to direct me to the correct department (plus terrible voice connection every time I called). I had to call Amex and ask them to block future charges. So buyer beware.

Hi justme101,

Thanks for your honest review of the VueZone -- we hope that it's continuing to work well for you and that it will serve you well. Can you tell us a bit more about the video quality you were experiencing? What resolution were you viewing it in, and was it on the desktop or mobile clients?

We're happy to help if you have any further questions. You can reach us at amazon@netgear.com.

I just received this and will return it. The only feature I like is the fast email alert that the camera has detected motion. However, the video of the event is nothing but a blur. I have more than adequate lighting, but still the video allows you to make out nothing of the moving object (which happened to be me walking into the room). I'm sure the camera is fine if you want to capture someone standing still at a door or window, but if you want to capture ANY motion, this is not the camera setup for you. I tried using the photo capture instead of video, and could not capture a single image of the moving object (me). It's as if it snaps a microsecond into the movement. So you will catch a door beginning to open, and not the person coming in. In terms of the price to quality, it seems like this should be a $75 setup. If you want to keep an eye on valuables, it'll do that, but if someone steals those valuables, you will only notice things disappearing, without any clue what the perpertrator looks like. I realize this is not professional surveillance equipment, but if it takes video, it should be able to capture even moderate images of a moving object.
Like I mentioned, an email alert that motion is detected is a cool feature, but a good image would be nice. As another customer mentioned, this is not 110 degrees "wide view" as advertised. It's only about 60 degrees. That does not cover the room I wanted to watch.

Hi JoeZ,

Thanks for your honest review. We want to help you get the most from VueZone. Can you tell us how far away you have the camera placed from the moving object you mention? Many factors can affect how the motion is captured, including how fast the object is moving and how far away the camera is from what you are attempting to record.

Please get in touch with us with as many details as you can (as well as a link to this review) and we'll be happy to work with you to get the best performance from your setup. We can be reached at amazon@netgear.com.
