As an aside, I note that Netgear is having difficulty with Windows 8.1. I have another Netgear adapter, a 2.4 GHz-only WND3100v2. The available driver for that is also still in beta testing. Of course, lots of peripherals manufacturers and users are having problems with 8.1 driver issues. Thanks, Microsoft. By contrast, my Belkin 2.4 GHz adapter works flawlessly in Windows 8.1 with no new driver installed.
Was it my antiquated XP HP tower or was it something else? For whatever reason I spent 90 minutes getting it going (not counting my travel time and wait time getting to my friends house). Odd that I had to download something to install the hardware that would presumably give me access to the internet. Catch 22 - I didn't have access to the internet without being able to install the drivers (or I'm just not savvy enough to get it done by other means).
That being said, this thing is great. It gets a good signal from my router which is a respectable distance away through two walls and a floor. Best signal than any of the other ones I tried (my last one simply died leaving me no access to downloads as mentioned). Speed test shows it running 25 (MPH) +. My max through time warner is 30. so it's faster than anything I've had hooked up yet. Four stars only because of the hassle getting it up and running.
UPDATE! My Netgear 6300 began to misbehave, dropping connections and needing rebooted three or four times a day. Through research on the web, it became evident that the Netgear Genie needed to run this was the culprit. I pulled this from the USB port and uninstalled Netgear Genie. My 6300 has been solid ever since. Now, I cannot say that this happened because of my dated XP or not.
