I also inspected the spark plug wires, and found that a hole had worn in a part of the wire that runs to cylinder 3. I wasn't sure my CE-light was on because of bad plugs, specifically--or if the wires were also a cause of the problem. However, given that new plugs, new wires, and a new coil only run about $100, replacing those was a good first step to take at home prior to taking the car into a mechanic for a diagnostic test, which probably would have run more than that.
Between these plugs, new NGK wires and the Beru coil my car is running like new again! It has a lot more pep, and the check engine light has stayed off after about ~100 miles of driving.
Being blue instead of black has to add at least 50 hp to my 2005 MINI cooper s. Also bought 4 new
NGK (3199) BKR6EQUP Laser Platinum Spark Plug and my MINI has never run better.. Which is the truth, since I think the 4 I plugs I took out are the original from the factory and the previous owner never changed them in the past 80k miles..
Regardless, was having missfires at low rpm when the engine was cold and under load, not anymore. Plus it idles a lot smoother, revs quicker, and significantly less vibrations make it through my semisolid engine mounts into the cabin. Would recommend.
Plus they're blue!
Paired these with NGK 54058 Spark Plug Wire Set also from Amazon. Make sure you are connecting the correct wires to the ignition coil if your coil and wires are not numbered. #1 cylinder is on passenger side, #4 is on drivers side of engine. No need to remove intercooler to change plugs on S model.
P.S. if your plugs have oil on top of them like mine did, then you need to replace your spark plug tube seals, will have to remove valve cover to replace those.
BMW rates either the Bosch or the NGK plug for 100,000 miles when used on an E46. People who do their own work often change them at 50,000 miles and experience faster starts. Getting access to the cylinder head requires the removal of four "Torqx" head bolts which secure the cabin ventilation cowl the the front of fire-wall above the aft portion of the engine. This is the only real barrier to entry, and it is a deliberate one to keep tinkerers away from the engine. (BMW keeps the unskilled away from their engines by making the engine cover removal non-obvious). There are many good videos on Youtube on how to do this. If you have not seen someone else do the job before, the task will be made easier by watching someone else demonstrate the task for you, on Youtube. Understanding the interlock on the connectors to the spark coils which sit above each plug for instance, is non-obvious to those who have not seen someone do the job before.
In this economy many people are doing their own maintenance who would not have dreamed of it three or four years ago. Many of the user forums and the videos available on Youtube offer excellent, step by step advice, on common procedures. These are an excellent aide to learning how to do careful, methodical work on these basic maintenance tasks.
