+++ Hitting greatly improved over 16
+++ Goalies are definitely smarter than 16.
++ HUT has sets now you can complete like MUT.
++Less chance of cross crease goals.
- - - AI is still a bit dumb this year. Especially defense.
- - - Players will put the puck in their own net including yourself sometimes.
- - - Soundtrack is terrible. Have seen much better ones in previous NHL Games, I'm looking at you NHL 2004.
Is it worth $60?
Yes, if you need the latest rosters and couldn't stand the hitting in 16. If you're willing to stick to 16 I'd say wait for 18 to come out or 17 to drop in price later in 2017 or catch a black friday deal.
I have been playing NHL for much of my life and this years edition is the first time I can say I do not enjoy playing it.
Almost regardless of what you do with the gameplay sliders, you can't tune off some of the annoying features that the game has done to keep scoring realistic. You can boost attribute effect and the game will just make the CPU player break land speed records to catch up. While the game forces your players to obey inertia (to varying levels depending on how much you are winning by) the CPU players are never held to such standards. If a CPU player so much as looks at you wrong when you have a lead, you will fumble the puck and appear to have taken a hit. CPU players visibly cross-check and elbow on a constant basis without ever getting a call, yet standard hip checks from your players will be flagged for an elbow or two a game.
Really, truly and honestly, from a longtime fan, this game features a lot of problems that the games have had for years and that are honestly hard to fully program out. However, this game has the pronounced level of these in any of them I've owned and after this many years of those problems existing, there isn't an excuse for them getting worse, let alone not improving. NHL 17 is a perfect example of what has gone wrong with modern EA games. Development spends all of the effort on pointless features, forced replays, and making the game look pretty for first time players and completely phones in the basic gameplay. They're already skating on thin ice by putting out nearly the same game every year for full price. When the point of the game is to actually play the game it doesn't make sense to not have the gameplay the primary focus. It's understandable for Transformer movies to miss having a reasonable plot and instead focus on pretty pictures since that's the focus, simply watching. However, what EA has done here is handicap the players ability to achieve this basic function. It would be as if in the same Transformer movie you weren't allowed to watch unless you squirted lemon in your eyes every 15 minutes. As the lemon takes away the pretty visuals, all you are left with is the lackluster dialogue and that's what's happened here. The game doesn't actually let you play. I'm just left with $60 worth of moving pretty pictures that I can only half-participate in.
The saddest part is that before this rubber band effect comes into play, this is one of the most realistic and best hockey simulators I've played. They've actually honed down things to be more representative of real hockey play. When that rubber band effect engages though, you don't feel like it's actually a good simulation beating you for a goal. It's just that the game decided it was time for them to score, a switch was flipped, and all of a sudden your guys can't find a stationary, are running with Scooby Doo legs, and every pass the computer executes is somehow a tape-to-tape one-timer, the likes of which have never been seen outside of EA products. Just get out of the way EA. Just get out of the way and let people play. I'll have more fun blowing out every team 21-2 than I will 4-3 with this obnoxious rubber band effect. At least then I'd be allowed to play.
