Anyway, suffice it to say that the room just doesn't have a logical place for a trash bin, and the cabinets are filled with cleaning supplies.
While searching for a space saving trash bin, I realized that the only logical place for one was on top of the dryer. That sounds perfect, since its primary purpose is to provide a place to quickly dispose of lint when cleaning the trap after each load of laundry. Then I realized that I was going to need some tiny trash can (to go with my imaginary tiny butler) because, well . . . let's face it . . . I'm short, not petite or small statured, just plain short at 61" on a good hair day. It's genetic and it is what it is. But this means that if I were to place anything taller than about 8" on top of my 53" tall dryer, I'd be reaching to deposit my lint and I might even have difficulty seeing to aim.
I looked at the few available small bins with rotating flap tops and such and found them to be comparably priced at just under $20. Then I came upon this baby. At the time it was a mere 2 bucks more than the 1.5 Liter swing top model, simplehuman Countertop Trash Can, White Steel, 1.5 Liters/ .4 Gallons, I'd almost resigned myself to purchase. Further, it was about $11 cheaper than my favorite pick, a snazzy 7 inch tall spring-loaded pushboy, Blomus Stainless-Steel Pushboy Wastebasket.
At 3 1/16" high and 7" in diameter, this gem is just the right height and ample enough to accommodate at least a few weeks worth of lint. Measurements given here are those of the receptacle portion of the unit, exclusive of the lid with the sensor, which when attached for use brings the height up to 4 inches.
I had absolutely no reservations about the automated opening mechanism, because I've had several larger (kitchen size) battery operated auto-open in the exam rooms in my office for about 6 years now. They've held up well, despite having lost parts to careless outside cleaning staff, frequent daily use, and three sets of professional movers (during relocation). The ones in my office have never failed me, except when in need of new batteries.
I've had this unit for about 3 weeks now, and am as pleased with its form and function as I could be. I highly recommend this nifty and reasonably priced little unit for anyone who needs a small bin for a tight spot, or plans to have soiled hands when trying to quickly stash garbage (as happens in the kitchen). This would also be great for someone with limited mobility to keep near a favorite chair, couch, or bed. It might even work in a teen-aged girl's bathroom as a way to discretely dispose of feminine hygiene products that don't flush well. It's unobtrusive and quite handy.
It uses 2 AA batteries, and does employ an energy savings mode when at rest. We do at least a few loads of laundry daily around here, and I haven't had to change the batteries yet. And, I'd be remiss if I failed to mention that we have two shed-monsters . . . er . . .feline family members, both white, one of whom has a long coat. We get plenty of waste in our dryer trap.
I will update when (rather if) this ever fails, but I am expecting longevity as that has been my experience with similarly mechanized products in my office.
Overall, it does what the company claims as far as opening and closing, doing so at about 10 to 5 inches from your hand or the object you're throwing away. It's quiet, durable, and has smooth opening and closing. I wasn't sure I would like the looks of it as I was thinking of buying it, especially since it's similar to the one we had, but I actually really like it and don't feel the pictures don't do it much justice. The lid is made of durable plastic and, while slightly thin, the metal is brushed and definitely fingerprint-proof. I also can't see it staining easily either, unlike our previous one. I like that it's taller than the old one we had, and I appreciate the open and close buttons for moments when you want to leave the lid open longer. The power switch on the back is handy, and I especially love how you can't see the bag sticking out if it's installed right. No odor detection is another bonus. I will say that this unit takes D batteries, not the C ones listed by Amazon.
I definitely recommend but will update if I notice problems anytime soon.
We learned very quickly that if you need the lid to stay open longer to move your arm over the sensor so it won't close on you. Overall an excellent product and well worth the money.
Otherwise I'm fairly happy with the purchase although I find the sensor to be a little wonky. It is very sensitive and unfortunately the space for my trash can is in a high traffic area, so it goes off pretty much every time you walk by. Yet at the same time, sometimes it doesn't respond when I'm actually trying to open it. Still better than my old trash can and generally pretty happy with it.
