I needed the light to have a strobe function. I needed the light to be able to tail stand, to act as a candle in case power went out. I needed multi levels of light from extremely dim, to extremely bright. I needed a flashlight that could last multiple hours. I needed a flashlight small enough for my pockets in my jeans. I needed a clip for my pocket. Also I wanted the flashlight not to roll if I placed it down, and it doesnt roll. Well this flashlight checked all of the needs off of my list. I compared this light extensively with the Fenix PD 32, and I couldnt find an area where that light justified the extra expense.
This flashlight has a great balance between throw and flood. There is a sort of donut in the center light, but most flashlights have this issue. The light I would describe as a neutral. Not too cool but definitely not warm. It looks well constructed. Also the button on the back of the light can be halfway depressed so you can keep your finger on the light and let go when you want it off. This is especially important at times you do not want someone to hear a click. Also if you did click the light on, it is barely audible. An extra bonus this light contains a signal that spells out S.O.S in case you are stranded. The light came with a holster but I have yet to use it. It also came with a wrist wrap or whatever they are called. I threw that away. If you are looking for a blinding light, look no further. Nitecore has come a long way and I feel they are surpassing many brands currently held as top makers of flashlights.
Max Brightness: 1) ThruNite 2) NiteCore 3) Fenix. Don't get me wrong. All three are blindingly bright and the differences are minimal.
Feel and aesthetics: 1) NiteCore 2) Fenix 3) ThruNite Note: All three are of excellent build quality. The NiteCore just feels and looks the most bad ass.
Strobe: 1) Fenix (it oscillates the speed. Most disorienting.) 2) NiteCore (Remembers last setting so if you turn it off with strobe and turn it back on strobe will start again. Impressive. 3) ThruNite
Brightness Levels: 1) ThruNite (5 levels with "Firefly" mode) 2) NiteCore (Only 4 levels but has a more useful low setting. 3) Fenix (5 levels)
All three of these lights make an outstanding EDC. That's why I own all three. Each one is just enough different from each other to make it fun and interesting.
