for managing settings are un-intuitive as can be and take lot of time.
A couple of weeks the unit would go dead. At first jiggling the
on and off switch turned it back on. Then it no longer came on at all.
Bad. Here's the reason and the crude fix - As mentioned in one other
negative reviews, the on and off switch has a tiny plastic rocker
piece in it that melts partially. I suspect the metal contact bridge
piece attached to it is the wrong material for handling the current and
heated enough to soften to bend the plastic rocker. The fix
is not elegant, but it is fool proof - I did it the hard way by taking
the whole unit and the switch apart. But this is the easier way.
You need - a small tip soldering iron, plus rosin core solder, and
maybe a bit of thin copper wire.
Lay the unit face down on a cloth or clean cardboard.
*** Make sure it is unplugged ***
Locate the small on/off rocker switch.
Pry only the plastic on/off rocker piece out of the the plastic switch
body with a very small screwdriver or other instrument of destruction.
It will go into the trash. With small needle nose pliers or what ever
you have tear, break or cut the tiny plastic separator piece between
the two visible contacts. Cut a small piece of solder, enough to contact
both visible contacts in the switch, when melted, and drop it into the
switch. Then melt that just enough to make a good connection with
both contacts. Don't melt the whole switch body, although the only
thing that really matters is that the connection is made.
The switch is held in the body of the unit without any snap-in catches
to hold it. It is held only with a bit of hotmelt glue. You need to
muscle it out of its hole. *** Do not pull the wires out hard or out
more than about 1/2 inch - you don't want to rip them off the circuit
board inside *** ( I didn't do this, but you might be able to
ease the process by warming the switch and adjacent plastic (some, not
more than you can touch with your finger)) I was able to muscle it
out of its hole with a strong knife blade. A chisel would also work.
Expect a couple of small scratches. Mine were barely visible.
Now, either wrap a little bit of thin bare copper wire around the bare
ends of the two wires to connect them and solder them, or,
(depending how long the wires are) cut the wires off the switch, and
solder them together. Wrap them with tape. Stuff them back in, not
too far. You can now either scrape the glue off the switch body and
wrestle it back into the opening to cover it, or put some strong layers
of tape over it. And how do you turn it on and off now? You can either
unplug it at the wall, or the power supply, or at the back of the display.
We don't do either, we have ours set to go on and off with its motion
PS The picture shows the switch with the on/off rocker piece pried out.
The thin bright line is one metal contact on edge. The bright square
is the other contact. It is positioned flat.
After 2 years the on-off switch failed. After a pleasant call to Nix customer service, I sent it back for repair (my shipping cost, since it was out of warranty) and they repaired and shipped back to me at no cost (including a new accessory pack). EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE.
I sent an email to the company and will place a call today. If I receive effective help, I hope to come back to this review and share the good news.
