Play it again, Eddie Muller! Continued excellence explodes out of the pages of NOIR CITY ANNUAL #5, which contains the best of 2012. Thank You again, Mr. Eddie Muller! If you haven't read the reviews of the past issues of this truly excellent publication-PLEASE DO SO! This yearly round-up of a compendium of essays, interviews, profiles, tributes, and reviews selected from the 2012 issues of NOIR CITY, a quarterly e-magazine that explores all aspects of Film Noir, once again hits a bullseye. The Film Noir Foundation is the creation of Mr. Eddie Muller, renowned novelist and "noirchaeologist". Its directors and advisory council are an eclectic mix of artists, film distributors, and industry professionals,and this yearly publication is its annual print anthology. The additional kicker here is that ALL proceeds from the sale of this book go directly to rescuing and restoring vintage noir films. If you haven't read my review of annual number four, I will sum up the main points. Actually, Amazon makes it easy for you to see the contents of each Annual by having you click into the table of contents and each section of the Annual. Again, the Annual is filled with lavishly illustrated with exclusive photos, production stills, and film posters, as well as rare photographs. The pages are high quality glossy stock and are top-notch which adds to your enjoyment of each Annual and noir lovers will find it hard to put down. Each volume is divided into specific sections. Highlights of this issue for me are as follows. Under ESSAYS:"Children of the Night", Noir and the loss of innocence by Jake Hinkson; "Shades of Black and Brown", Visions of Mexico and Mexican-Americans in 40's Film Noir by Eric Enders: and "Detour Redux", Edgar Ulmer's Revisionist Screenplay of his Poverty Row Classic by Steve Kronenberg. Moving along to PROFILES: "Jan Sterling", Platinum Noir by Imogen Sara Smith; "Mr. Despicable", The Big Screen Villainy of Ted De Corsia by Carl Steward; and "A Schoolgirl with a Sorceress'Eyes", Gloria Grahame by Anne M. Hockens. Under APPRECIATIONS:"John Garfield", Real-Life Noir Hero, by Carl Steward; and "One Mistake Is All It Takes", The Two Versions of The Killers by Andrew Nette. Under INTERVIEWS: "William Friedkin", Hurricane Billy is Back" by Eddie Muller; and a very revealing and insightful "Deep Inside the Film Noir Foundation", Eddie Muller, founder and president of the FNF by Jesse Fankushen. There is also a review section that covers some significant noir films from 2012 such as "End of Watch" by Kelly Vance , "Haywire", also by Kelly Vance, and "Killer Joe", once again by Kelly Vance. As I mentioned in my review of Annual #4, my examples are just the tip of the iceberg and there is not even ONE wasted word in this treasure, which contains 264 pages of Film Noir Heaven. The price for these Annuals are an excellent bargain! And to top it off, all of the $ goes back into preserving, restoring, and digging up even more lost Noir treasures. Many noirs will then be able to be converted from VHS to DVD and hopefully, even 35mm Film Prints. For Film Noir Lovers, you simply cannot go wrong! MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! SMRZ!!

Each Film Noir annual is like a course in Noir film studies but written intelligently without being pretentious or intellectual. Many of the authors have written books on Noir films or done commentary on DVD noir titles, so they know the subject well and share esoteric facts as well as their opinions. Printed on high quality paper and chocked full of photos from noir films, a. Noir City Annual is the equivalent of a comprehensive book about the noir genre ,including books as well as movies. Whether it's a movie's contents, focusing on an actor, director, studio, or a comparison between two versions of the same movie (The Killers, based on the famous Hemingway short story and filmed in the 40s and the 60s). Noir City often links several articles by theme or other common bonds... For example, Annual # 5 examines a John Garfield movie, The Breaking Point, an adaptation of the Hemingway novel, "To Have and Have Not." This was Garfield's last role for Warner Brothers after a 10-year period, followed by an independent studio movie and a tragic death at age 39. Ironically, this may have been Garfield's best role and should have lead to bigger and better films instead of blacklisting and the grave. Nor City publisher Eddie Muller also explains how the Breaking Point did a better job of capturing Hemingway than Howard Hawks; earlier version that teamed Bogie and Bacall on-and- off screen. l. There's even a letter commenting on The Breaking Point from Julie Garfield, John's daughter. (A rare photo shows a smiling John Garfield holding an equally happy toddler Julie). So in this one volume, you get examinations of two Hemingway adaptations from book to screen and comparisons of first and second attempts to put it on film, as well as a look at John Garfield in a movie that's been overlooked because of the star quality remake. and possibly his problems during the Red Scare. And that's only a portion of this 264 book/magazine. Learn what Noir movies became part of the 3D craze; read profiles of Dana Andrews and Jan Sterling. A Film Noir Annual is not cheap at $25, but it's a must for fans of the genre.

The book, which arrived here yesterday - 17th June 2014 - contains very interesting articles about Film Noir movies and their actors.
The article on Gloria Graham is excellent. I was also very interested to learn about the movie "Native Son". I read the book many years ago, but didn't know there was film with the author of the book playing the part of Bigger Thomas.

This book arrived here in perfect condition. Unfortunately, the second one "Noir City Annual 201", which was sent with it was damaged.

As always, Volume #5 carries on the tradition of digging out the tiniest details on dozens of forgotten (and some not-so-forgotten) films from that dark postwar era. Great bios on character actors, camera men, directors with info you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else. This issue has an extensive section on the almost-lost John Garfield classic, The Breaking Point, a remake of To Have and Have Not that hewed much more closely to Hemingway's original story. Many hours of fun reading within. Highly recommended for the noir completist.
