NOIR CITY Magazine #32 Paperback – September 13, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Issue #32 features a one-of-a-kind cover story. Gloria Grahame may be the most popular actress in film noir, and the details of her life have been well documented. Offering a fascinating and fresh perspective on Grahame's onscreen legacy: Emmy Award winner Dana Delany, who candidly admits that Gloria has been her lifelong muse. It's a unique opportunity to venture inside the craft, "actor to actor."
Also in this issue: Randy Dotinga on how classic film noir hid LGBTQ characters in plain sight; Nora Fiore, Twitter's Nitrate Diva, surveys astrology in crime films; Nathalie Atkinson interviews Pornsak Pichetshote, writer of the new noir comic The Good Asian; Eddie Muller tells the story behind the noir-stained paintings of the outsider artist known as Ely Legerdemain; Christina Newland considers the domestic drama of The Reckless Moment (1949); novelist S.A. Cosby explains why Point Blank (1967) is his favorite neo-noir; conversation with Velvet Was the Night author Silvia Moreno-Garcia; and Steve Kronenberg asks "Noir or Not?" about Seconds (1966). A large part of this magazine is devoted to the Bad Girl Of Film Noir, Gloria Grahame. She became a Film Noir Icon. She was very beautiful, talented, & winner of an Oscar, for her part in The Bad & The Beautiful. She was also a very troubled girl, who married 4 times, had 4 children, & seemed to court trouble.
She appeared in 44 Feature Films from 1944-1981, many of these Noir Films. She was described by some as a bit loopy, others as a Sashaying Contradiction.
Her fall from grace began with an affair with her Husband, Movie Director Nicholas Rays 13 year old son, when she was 28 years old. Nicholas divorced Gloria over this, but due to their positions in the Movie industry kept this quiet, until 8 years later in 1960, Gloria & her boy lover married.& had 2 sons. This created a huge scandal, that Gloria never really recovered from.
She also was difficult when making movies, would not always follow the script, & drove some Directors mad, that never knew what she would do next. The Movie Oklahoma, was her undoing. She did not want to appear in this movie, a Musical, as she told them she could not sing, but the Director was determined that no one except Gloria could play Ado Annie, & they lured her with the promise of big money. She was required to sing 2 songs in this, which caused her some distress, as she felt the other Actors were laughing at her efforts, she stated she also didn’t want to wear that silly bonnet.
She showed her displeasure in many ways when making the movie, & was so awful to the other stars in the movie, & Directors, who didn’t know what she would do & say next, that many Directors stayed clear of her for future films. All good roles in top movies dried up for her for years after Oklahoma. She also was an early devotee of plastic surgery, & repeatedly had surgery on her upper lip, mouth, & chin, which she felt were needed to make her beautiful, but in reality made her upper lip immobile, & caused a lisp to her voice.
The Magazine tells of her 2 battles with cancer, Breast Cancer in 1974, at the time of her last divorce, & Abdominal Cancer in 1980.. She passed away in 1981, after spending 6 days at the home of her last lover, although their affair had been over for a year. She requested to stay with Peter who was 30 years her junior during her last days in Liverpool, where she had been performing in a play. When he could see she was dying he notified her children back in USA, who flew over to take her back home. She died a few hours after arriving back in NewYork.
In this Magazine, many of her movies are touched on, during the later part of her career, she acted in a few Horror Movies, the last one “The Nesting” finished only a few weeks before her death. She did what she wanted, ACTING, right until the last week of her life.
Also in the Magazine there is a long article of past Gay Icons, who were often hidden in plain sight. Also Noir Astrologers, & much more.
I’m looking forward to purchasing the next Noir Magazine in the series.
