NOLS' new Lightning guide is an excellent reference for those traveling in the backcountry! This guide includes practical advice that teaches the reader how to minimize risks associated with lightning storms.

This guide was easy to read with short, concise chapters explaining lightning science in simple language. This NOLS guide tells the best actions to take if your travel party encounters lightning in the backcountry.

The chapters on lightning science are understandable with lots of pictures. I'd highly recommend this guide when planning a trip into the backcountry and looking for more knowledge about anticipating storms and minimizing lightning risks.

As an outdoor educator and guide I have studied lightning for years and believe Gookin's book to be the most useful book for outdoor people available. It is concise, clear and well illustrated with great explanations and stories. I have ordered several more for my university and plan to make it required reading for all of my instructors - thank you for your efforts NOLS!!!!!!! You can't imagine how much we appreciate it - well done!
