Snoopy and the Red Baron were more fun...
on May 24, 2011
Well, this video isn't really bad; it's just that I was expecting more. Specifically, one of the reviews on Amazon led me to believe that the CGI imagery would be the equivalent of that found in the "Dogfight" series (which is very good); the CGI on this is simply not at that level. The content seemed accurate enough, although some minor things asserted as fact are actually debated among people who are genuinely knowledgeable in this area. The content was about what I should have expected for a Nova presentation, obviously aimed at a general audience. If you're vaguely curious about WWI air fighting and the Red Baron in particular, this is a decent video intro. If you've already dug into the subject to even a moderate depth, you are very unlikely to learn anything new here. If you're in between those places and interested in getting a solid intoductory grasp of what really happened above Europe from 1914 to 1918 and are a reader, I hightly recommend The Rise of the Fighter Aircraft by Richard P. Hallion and The Origin of the Fighter Aircraft by Jon Guttman: both excellent history and good reads and both available on Amazon, at least used. Again, this video wasn't bad, and was about what I should have anticipated. Was just hoping for more. But read Hallion and Guttman.
