My 11-year-old, 4-year-old, and I had great fun with this kit! What a blast creating characters and scenarios. To be sure, as one reviewer noted, the only thing you get in the box is some clay (that stains your hands--beware of blue!) and some cardboard props like backdrops and trees or whatever. The total for the contents for the box would be $5 tops, and the app is free. You could consider this package a complete ripoff because it is considerably more expensive than the total of the contents. However, I had clay and paper to cut out props and access to download the app for many, many years and never thought to put them together and make videos. If I could do it over, I would still spring for the kit because of the organized inspiration it provided. The instruction manual gave us some valuable pointers, but probably nothing that a stop-motion website would give, but I never thought to check for a website before buying the kit. If you aren't sure if you should but it, DO IT!! It is totally worth the extra money.

This is a very nice starter kit to give as a gift for a child interested in making Claymation movies. Clay, tools, props, stand, eyes, backdrops and stage included - be careful opening the box as it becomes the stage. The backdrops in particular made for eye-catching movies. More a one time use kit than long play, it is still all contained and easy to use. The app is free to download and easy to use for most ages. Presentation matters in gift giving and this does a great job of setting the little director up to make movies.

I bought this for my 8yo nephew for his birthday present. I live in the USA and the price was brilliant ($18)compared to the uk Amazon (which it was over £100 ) so was never going to be an option to buy in the uk. Plus I thought what a cool aunt I would be buying this fab toy that would be out or price range for most people unless they lived in the states!!
My nephew loves making up his own stories and his parents have a smart phone IPad/iPhone / so I knew it was going to be a real hit! Well, when he opened it up and saw what he could do with it, his eyes lit up!
The box doesn't really show what is in it (there is only a written description). There are some backdrop plus stuff to make characters - modeling clay, boggle eyes etc and a plastic stand for your iPhone.

I spoke to my sister and my nephew about the product and they were bitterly disappointed. They said the backdrop was just made out of strong cardboard, the modeling clay is just in balls with some goggly eyes, the plastic stand was just ok ( but most households already have stands) and there is no app!!!! The manufactor suggest which FREE app to use and then to get more useful stuff you're having to do an in house purchase for £5!
They did their own stop start animation using none of the stuff inside the box and with the downloaded and ungraded app. They used his own characters from his Lego set and some craft stuff found at home.
So to summarize, don't buy- spend your money on buying some fab craft stuff, download some backdrops and look for a great app!
I honestly can't believe that this toy is selling for over £100 on UK Amazon,,.utter rip off!!

This kit is really great! I have an 8 and a 12 year old and they are having so much fun making their own stop motion shorts. They love the plasticine because it doesn’t dry and they enjoyed the little paper props that come with the kit. It was very easy for them to follow directions and build the set from the kit. I also love how it all fits back inside the box for storage. A perfect gift for creative kids, honestly even as an adult I think it’s very entertaining.

I don't often write negative reviews, but feel duty-bound in this case.
Inside the box you get about 2-3 quids worth of plasticine and 2 plastic tools which look like they would break if you tried to use them.
Apart from that you get a few sheets of cardboard props, a "stage" (which is actually the box it comes in and two large stiff paper backgrounds, printed on both sides (giving you 4 scenarios).
The artwork and build quality of the above is of the same quality you'd get off the back of a cereal packet. I say that, but actually the cardboard on a cereal packet is a bit more robust than the "stage". It's more like the cardboard on a Happy Meal. Oh, and the instructions are similarly really cheaply produced and seem to have very little thought put into them.
The super flimsy cardboard affair is not really suited to the use of plasticine models because plasticine is to heavy for it.
I'd say the whole thing costs about 2.50 to produce and they sell it to you for 13.99.

For someone wanting a nice intro to animation, I'd recommend the "Animation Studio" by Helen Piercy. This is also mostly made of card, but it is thick, robust card, with a good print quality. A lot of thought has clearly been put into making this one as a beautiful start to animation, but someone who clearly has a passion for it. This is also evident into her beautifully written and illustrated guide that comes with it. And it's 9.09, so a lot cheaper too.
