The first trimmer in its class to receive the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star certification for its charging system, this efficient model from Black & Decker trims mowed areas on most 1/2-acre homesites, and is great for heavy-duty weed clearing and cutting. Powered by a longlasting 36-volt NiCad battery for robust performance that rivals gas, but without the mess and hassle, the NST2036 boasts a 14-inch cut path and speeds up to 7,500 RPM. In fact, it cuts more area per charge than any other cordless trimmer currently on the market, and yields impressive results even around tough areas like against fences, near gutter drains, or the perimeter of trees with large root bases. It's also very easy to operate, thanks to a host of helpful features like dual .080-inch lines for long life, a patented gear drive for the right amount of torque to handle thick, bushy grass and brush, and a variable speed trigger for optimum control. For additional comfort and stability, you can adjust the auxiliary handle to your height, and the telescoping shaft can also be extended to access whatever you're cutting. Finally, a bump feed system feeds the line on demand, and a shoulder strap helps ensure even distribution of weight. The NST2036 comes with a three-year warranty.

Black & Decker offers a full line of electric and cordless grass trimmers with cutting paths ranging from 9 to 14 inches. Packed with power to tackle tough weeds and grass, these trimmers are low noise and do not emit fumes.
Super-Charge Your Yard with the NST2036 Cordless String Trimmer
Now the company that invented cordless yard solutions brings you the first battery-powered string trimmer that delivers the performance of gas. Just imagine the freedom that cordless convenience can bring -- without the hassles of pull cords, spilled gas, tune-ups, or harmful emissions. With 36 volts of power and a newly designed, super-efficient motor that boasts a patented gear drive transmission, you’ll get all the torque you need for tough cutting with less noise and vibration than a traditional gas trimmer.
Gas vs. Electric: Black & Decker Changes the Rules
Many consumers own a gas-powered string trimmer because they don't think that electric string trimmers have the power to address their needs. But Black & Decker's 36-volt trimmer is a true breakthrough, offering the performance of a gas-powered string trimmer with the tidiness of a battery power source. This trimmer's removable high-output 36-volt NiCad battery features pro-grade cells with a total capacity of over 75 watt hours. That means it offers more than three times the energy of an 18-volt battery (as compared to HPB18-OPE 18-volt pack).
Gear drive transmission delivers power and no-stall torque for performance comparable to a gas trimmer.
Removable 36-volt battery delivers over 75 watt hours of power and is rechargeable.
Starts every time with the squeeze of a variable-speed trigger for gas-like control; lock-off button adds safety.
Rugged bump-feed head features heavy-duty .080-inch line and a 14-inch cutting path.
Feature-Packed and Ready to Work
The NST2036 has a 14-inch cutting swath, which is the largest ever for a cordless string trimmer -- but that's not its only claim to fame. It delivers real industry-leading performance, no-stall torque, and true efficiency for run time that will amaze and delight you, all from a battery that delivers hundreds of recharge cycles ... so it will last for years. This model easily covers even big yards with loads of trees and fences.
And in addition to all this power, the NST2036 is extremely easy to control. It has no frustrating cords to pull, but it starts every time with just a squeeze of the trigger; and this variable speed trigger allows for gas-like control, so you'll always receive just the right power for any application. A lock-off button prevents accidental starts, and the rugged bump-feed head stocks a heavy-duty dual .080-inch line. The telescoping shaft offers quick and simple height adjustment, and the auxiliary handle adjusts to various heights for comfort in all trimming positions -- for users of every size.
Best of all, the NST2036 is the first trimmer in its class to receive the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star certification for its charging system. With the NST2036 you'll save money on energy bills, and at the same time you can help prevent greenhouse gas emissions for a cleaner planet.

Problem is, Black & Decker doesn't sell replacement batteries. My original battery died last season. Rather than simply replace the battery, I need to buy a whole new trimmer. It won't be a Black & Decker.
Tool makers need to stand behind their products if they want customer loyalty. That means making replacement parts available.
My yard is only a heartbeat over 1/4 acre so it's not huge, and I've got two gas powered trimmers in the shed, but I'm sick of the 2 cycle engines with the gas oil mixture so it's been years since I've trimmed. I know that was asking a bit much of the black and decker, but I was only able to do the front, side and half of the back before the battery gave out. Next time I probably could make it through the yard on one cut, if I only have a week's worth of growth.
Now if I would have had my second battery I would have finished up this time with no problem, so overall I'm satisfied that I got what I paid for. I suspect that B&D has stuck with the ni-cads because they are a known quantity and a Li-Ion version would be double the price and perhaps no one would buy it. I suppose...
Still there is no perfect solution, extension cords are a pain if you have any size lot, 2 cycles are noisy and hard to start, 4 cycles are big and heavy, 18V is a joke, so for now this B&D with 2 batteries is the best compromise.
On the plus side this thing has power to spare. The trigger gives you the illusion of variable speed, but it really only has 2 speeds, wide-open and something that is about half speed. I found it nearly impossible to get anything in between, unless you continually bump the throttle. I barely ever opened it wide up as I know that will suck the battery dry in no time.
I did have one tangle in the cord and had to re-spool it, but all trimmers have that issue. There has been no progress across the industry in 20 years to solve that problem, except for the ones that just gave up and have you insert little cut pieces of cord into the head.
Overall a decent product for the money. If the price with a spare battery is not too painful and your yard is not too big and you stay on top of it then you can get away from gas and go with this. Just beware of what you are buying.
1) The unit has incredible power. No doubt about it. It's almost equal to my Ryobi or Edge gas trimmer. Thing is, it's got no staying power. It will ALWAYS run down, within 20 minutes, MAXIMUM. How did I find this out? After the thing died, the first time out after 15 minutes, I couldn't believe it! I called B&D and spoke to customer service. They said the reviews on the Amazon website are "not exactly true" and gave me a case number (Ref #100507-002269). The customer service rep said, "yes it has lots of power, but runtime is ONLY 15-20 minutes...at MAXIMUM...less in hot climates. We actually get lots of complaints about the runtime being so short." I couldn't believe it. One guy on the Amazon site said he charged it once every three lawn cuts because it had so much "staying power". There were other reports on staying power being good, as well. NOT TRUE. The people leaving these reviews must have lawns the size of garden patches. Forget it, this unit is useless for any real cutting and their older $99 unit Lawn Hog (we've had for three years now and is finally dying), outlasts this unit by a full 35 minutes of MORE cutting time on St. Augustine "grass"...up to 45 min total!
2) As I bought it for my wife to use, she found it not only ran down in no time, but was twice as heavy as the cheaper $99 B&D unit...the NST-2018. So it sucks in that category as well. Save your money and buy the cheaper unit. I returned mine. B&D said they also might discontinue this unit because of this problem.
