Well, the title does say that it's a Vietnamese-English dictionary and NOT a Vietnamese-English/English-Vietnamese dictionary.
To everyone else:
This is very good dictionary if you have an understanding of the Vietnamese language. Compared to other Viet dictionaries I've seen, the printed words in this book are larger and clearer (there are a few cases where the accents and/or the words are blurred).
If you're just learning the language, this book won't be for you. You would be better off if you bought an Engish-Vietnamese dictionary or a dual language dictionary.
For starters, it's only a one-way dictionary - which it does say on the cover, but definitely makes it less 'practical' than it claims to be. When trying to actually learn the language, instead of just translating some text I had, I always had to rely on www.vdict.com to figure out what I wanted to say. So, maybe useful if you just want to read Vietnamese, but for someone trying to learn how to speak or produce the language, a problem.
On top of that, my Vietnamese teacher was confused by some of the translations when she looked through it - maybe a function of her level of English, but she said that some of the translations were strange or old-fashioned. On top of that, she'd never heard of a large number of the (Vietnamese) words in the dictionary, which we figured out were archaic or very technical. The dictionary simply gives a word-for-word translation + word class, with no indication of usage or example sentences. Although it does mark some words as 'R' (restricted usage) it doesn't give any explanation for HOW the usage is restricted. It also doesn't contain a lot of slang words or colloquialisms, which is a weakness for a language learner.
Overall, a decent enough dictionary but inferior to the Tuttle version (http://www.amazon.Read more ›
people learn to speak the English Language.
