Maybe if it came with a little bag that held a few extra so you could put it back together after it breaks, but when the cover pops off and a tiny metal pin goes flying across the room there is zero protection left for the screen. Other flip covers I've owned also were held in place with pins, but they were a larger single pin that ran the length of the cover, this one only has a tiny little pin in each end so if it pops loose one or both of them will be lost.
The cover itself works fine, though there is no coverage on the ports, but with the design that's obvious. It stands the more upright position well, though the lower angle liked to slip, for viewing while I have lunch. If not for those pins, and there being no spares included, I'd give it four stars with the only negative being it is very overpriced for what it is.
I'm planning to contact Nvidia and, if like my water bottle manufacturer did with the gasket that failed, they ship me a little bag with a few spare pins in it I will raise my rating.
This works good to protect the front of the Nvidia Shield Tablet.
It has a magnet that seems to help it stay in place
It stands up if I need it to.
What I do not like.
The back is not covered on my tablet.
It sometimes comes off of the tablet to easily which concerns me.
Overall it a okay product but I don't think it will protect much for accidental dropping of the tablet.
PS if a person from invidia is reading this, know that I have spent way over a grand on your products, and this is not the quality that I expect from nvidia.
UPDATE 6/7/15: Cover broke. Rod that holds the plastic magnetic latch broke right off. Very displeased. don't buy.
I'm sorry , this is not a design issue and the materials used are stable to be used for normal everyday usage, this does not qualify as a manufacturing defect , and is considered a user induced damage which is unfortunately not covered under warranty . We apologize for any inconvenience.
So much for customer service! This was not "user induced damage" but rather poor design ( The hinge is comprised of plastic around .7 mm thick at its thinnest). So unimpressed! Buy one of the cheaper covers instead!!

It is so small and light and doesn't make the tablet bulky like all the other sleeves. It clips into place with magnets, guided by two little nudges that fit into the side of the tablet. The magnets are strong enough to lift the entire tablet by the cover. In every day use the cover never came off unwanted.
The cover also holds onto the display strong enough by magnet to keep it from flapping around randomly. The angle when used as a stand is practical for most situations and stable enough for use on trains, plains etc.
Some have criticised that it's too fragile and that the hinges break. One day I dropped the tablet and in an attempt to catch it caught only the cover while accelerating the tablet even further. All of this in an odd sideways angle. The consequence was, that the cover came off the tablet (the latter landing on the sofa at projectile speed) and the cover disintegrated a bit. What had happened: Since the cover was pulled off sideways (towards the USB plug) the little nudges had held onto the tablet until the very last second. These nudges seem to be held in the hollow aluminium backbone of the hinge by some black tape. The tape expanded a bit and the hinge bolts were able to escape from their holes. The fix was easy, find the bolts, put them back, put the tiniest drop of glue on the little nudge and push it back into the hollow backbone of the hinge. Wait 5 minutes et voila, as new.
No let me be clear here, I was really clumsy and I am sure had it been one of those covers that hold on tightly with a backplate, I would have torn the front off completely. So in a way it was the modular build that saved it. Of course without the sofa the tablet might have been dead...
Since I think I can't blame the cover for me being clumsy and because it performs so adorably in every day use: 5 stars!
This cover/case resembles the Smart Covers seen on iPads, but these are fine tuned for the Nvidia Shield Tablet and fit perfectly, made using very strong magnets and 3 segments (2 large and 1 small).
As shown in the pictures, this cover provides 2 angles when standing the device up and 1 angle when resting the device for typing.
- When typing, this cover works perfectly, and the device remains very still for typing ease.
- The materials used are very premium, and in the months of owning this product there is no sign of wear whatsoever.
- The magnets are very strong, and can support the tablet's weight with no issue.
- 3 positions are offered to stand this case in (although 1 of these is not particularly sturdy, see the cons for more on that).
- The cover looks very nice, and you have the slight satisfaction of knowing that it is an official Nvidia cover for piece of mind.
- The cover is surprisingly heavy, and you will notice a difference when you detach the cover, but due to the ease of magnets the cover can be easily taken off and then attached back on with no problems!
- When the tablet stood up at the steeper angle, you will notice the device wobble a bit when you tap the screen. This is not a big issue, and the device has never wobbled so much as to fall over, but it will make drawing harder if you use it in this way.
- The cover is expensive, so if you're looking for a very budget case you should look elsewhere.
- It is clear what you get with this product, so if you need full protection including the backplate and sides, this cover will not be enough.
To conclude, an excellent product that is a joy to use! The Nvidia Shield Tablet cover has kept the tablet safe and the screen free of scratches, while also offering multiple standing positions (the main reason I purchased this cover). However, the cover does add a reasonable weight to the device and is expensive compared to some alternatives, but if you're looking for a good case for the Nvidia shield, this is a must have!
It's well made and has a soft touch material which makes contact with the screen when closed. Thankfully the cover includes a magnet so you will get screen unlock as you open the cover and locked once the cover is closed. Speaking of magnets the cover clamps to the SHIELD with some sturdy magnets that feel as if they are not going to give up any time soon.
The case is very well made and the magnets that both clamp to the SHIELD and to the back of the tablet to hold it in place when used as a stand are fantastic.
A recommended product from me.
Auto on off works reliably.
The stand is very stable. I made the mistake at first of folding the flap inside so that the internal felt surface contacted the rear of the shield, this kept slipping. I realised that folding the flap so that the outside of the cover contacts the rear of the shield is far more solid
No rear or side protection, so I've vinyl wrapped the Shield to protect from scratches
I previously used a full case (the Fintie NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet SmartShell Case) which gave much better protection, but it made the already heavy Shield a lot more bulky and less convenient to carry, so I'm keeping the Nvidia case.
There are many ways (8+) of using it of but 4 is what it was designed for. In addition to these 4, I can lay it portrait on a table, or make a triangular prism on the left to hold for convenient single-handed reading. It is possible to lay it 90 degrees upright on a table using one of the ‘SHIELD’ binding’s two resting modes.
