Cheap and works. Now I can finally use my projector without spending big money. No problems so far after 1 month of use. Supports 1080p but sadly my projector isn't 1080p... I use NVIDIA's custom resolution to create a 1920x1080 resolution and it works but since the projector also isn't 16:9 lol a very small vertical portion isn't displayed, about 10-15 pixels across if I had to guess. Still better than default 1024x768.

This adapter works well with both my Beaglebone Black (with an additional MicroHDMI to HDMI adapter) and with my Raspberry Pi, but please note: it does not work on all monitors. I have an old (circa 2003) LCD with which it DOES NOT work, though it works perfectly with a newer (circa 2007) Dell LCD that it does work with. I'm not quite sure why the old one doesn't work (perhaps it requires more power than can be pushed over HDMI), but I bought 4 of these devices, and none of them work on that monitor. My other monitors work well, though, and the devices even work at a resolution of 1920x1200 on a fairly new Acer monitor (although it has HDMI input so I won't be using them with that monitor).

I'm very happy with this converter as it works wonderfully with my Raspberry Pi model B. I found a similar cable in a retail computer store for 49.99 so I’ll never buy retail again. I read one review of someone that was having issues with this cable for their Rasp Pi but more than likely their issue was caused but their power supply. I’m using a Verizon charger with a USB to Micro USB with an output of 5 volts 1A and it works like a charm. If you're running less than 5V 1A and overloading your USB ports you may have problems so check power specs before assuming it's a converter problem. This particular cable is an excellent buy!

I bought this to convert a Raspberry Pi (Linux single board computer) video output from HDMI to VGA.

When I got it, I first tested it on my Apple MacMini and it seemed to work fine with a VGA monitor; however, with the Pi, it would not drive the display.

In going through postings on the Pi developer's forum, this converter was mentioned several times as overloading the CPU board: HDMI only specs a capability of 50 mA of current @ +5v, which is intended to power an eeprom in the display/adapter that returns configuration information. This converter pulls over 400 mA, which may be why there is no display. In some cases the excess current can burn out the protection circuit on the host board, resulting in a diode that is either open circuit or one that passes current without providing any reverse voltage protection.

Since more expensive converters have separate power supplies, a workaround is to rewire the device with a separate 5V input (for example, from a powered USB connection). Or in the case of the Pi, replace its on-board protection diode with a more robust one and use a larger Pi board power supply.

While this converter works with my MacMini, I am hesitant to recommend it for that application even if it is cheaper than the Apple Thunderbolt/mini-DisplayPort to VGA converter.

(Note that the Thunderbolt interface is spec'd at a more robust 10 Watts so it can support cable-powered converters).

(Another note: you should *not* use the USB ports on the Raspberry Pi to supply power to the converter since they are only good for 100 mA;
a powered USB hub will be able to supply 500mA.

I was able to pop the adapter open at the VGA connector with a guitar pick; I think I see the power and ground connections on the edge of the board, but need to confirm this with the HDMI spec and a meter before doing any re-wiring)

I'm not a huge fan of this product. When I recieved it, the VGA port was not properly aligned with the case, making it difficult to connect to a screen.

However, it did work, and is really an excellent value for the price. If you're willing to deal with a product that isn't of the highest quality, and you can wait the long shipping time, then buy this. If you want something that looks a bit more put together, you're gonna have to shell out a bit more.

Unfortunately, shortly after recieving it, i cracked the case (It fell under a rocking chair. Totally my fault.) I'm replacing it with this:
VicTsing Aluminium HDMI Male to VGA Female Video Converter Adapter Cable with Video and Audio output For PC Laptop xbox DVD HDTV  It works wonderfully, and is far more durable.

EDIT (11/7/2013):
I have had to downgrade this product to two stars because it's been slowly failing in the last two months or so, (about 8 months after purchase. The monitor which I hook my computer up to no longer displays the computer screen and I have made sure that the HDMI port on my laptop is still fine. Granted, because I used this with my laptop I was constantly disconnecting and reconnecting the adapter which may have caused it to fail earlier. It did last a solid 8 month though before failing, so it gets two stars. I will not be buying this again, but will spend a bit more on a quality adapter.

Original:
Cheapest way to connect a new computer to an older monitor. My only complaint is that I was not able to screw in both sides with the connector screws. For some reason only one would catch, if I move my computer too much, the connection is sometimes lost. Since I'm not moving my computer around while it's hooked up, not a big deal, but it's the only reason I don't feel like I should give it the 5 star rating. Would recommend and buy again.

I bought this for use with my Lenovo Yoga 13, just in case I needed to connect to an older VGA projector. This one was priced right, so I gave it shot. It works great, nothing to install and it plugs right into the HDMI port. While I was at a customer last week, he threaded to steal this one. When I saw the adapter he was currently using, I could see why. This one is light weight and easy to carry in a bag.
