I had never even heard of Naikan until recently when I watched Gregg's 'Tricycle' Retreat. I became immediately interested in learning more about self reflection, so I bought the book and am so glad I did! This book is written in such a clear, concise way that it made it very enjoyable to read. It really has helped me turn my attention inward. The exercises have also helped me to be more appreciative of all the 'things' in my life from my toothbrush to my computer! And, as a results, I have developed a stronger sense of gratitude in my day to day life. I love this book and can see myself reading it over and over again in my life.

Asks us to look at ourselves holistically, not cut off one another. Easier said than done when more often than not, it’s always about us or me first and foremost. But in reality (in actual reality not just the reality our mind can comprehend) I/we are alway both more and less than we realize at the same time. Naikan is an insightful guide on the path of holistic self-awareness that is a revolutionary step toward sustainable peace and fulfillment.

Don't be intimidated by the title of this book. Gregg Krech is a very practical American man, and he uses plain English and clear examples as he teaches his readers how to recognize the way they are supported every minute of every day by people, processes and products that they give nothing back to, not even thanks.
Bridges, electric companies, air traffic controllers, the person in the next lane who does not suddenly veer into my lap... Without the efforts and self-control of similar people and processes I rarely notice, my own life would just fall apart!!
So would yours!
In a time of financial disruption like this, when markets and regulatory processes we mostly ignored have suddenly turned around and demanded our attention in painful and frustrating ways, you might find great comfort in learning to recognize how many OTHER things still operate to benefit and protect you. And you might feel much better if you learn how to appreciate and even deliberately participate in all this invisible kindness and responsibility that goes on, every single minute of our lives.
Through well-written real-life stories and easy and effective exercises, Gregg Krech's book teaches you to feel better and behave better, and notice it happening.
Wouldn't you like that, right now?
Okay. Maybe not as much as your money doubling on the stock market. But maybe enough to smile tonight when you walk in the door. And wouldn't the people you live with be happy about that?

A great little book that can help you self-examine your life and the direction you need to go. When you are at a crossroad in your life, looking for the direction you need to pursue, this book can help. It points out areas that we need to be greatful and those we need to examine and maybe leave behind. Sometimes we don't make the conscience effort to reflect on decisions we or others have made...in order to grow and live a fullfilling life, we must examine what makes us responsible, productive and contributing adults in society. I think this book helps us do just that but it also helps us do it with decisive JOY

Long before Oprah popularized gratitude journals, Naikan was used in Japan. Gregg Krech makes Naikan accessible for the Westerner.Through it, we learn to meditate on what we receive, what we give, and what troubles and difficulties we cause. These three basic forms of awareness enable one's Naikan practice to awaken appreciation for all things. Even y-our breath is a gift.
Best wishes.

Simply & directly written this book presents Naikan in an easily understood, practical way. Working this system of interaction with others, with the self and the planet seems to start as one reads the book. The power self-reflection that leads to action is presented clearly and objectively.

This is a book that I was required to study for school. There are exercises to do along the way. If you ignore these, the book will be of no value. The book teaches you about self-reflection, gratitude and humility. If you want to learn how to be a better person, then this book is a must.

This book provides a refreshing break from the popular idea that emotional health is achieved by analysing one's life and (generally) laying the blame at someone else's feet. The focus is very much on self-improvement. The author provides three questions through which he encourages readers to consider how they have affected the world for good or ill, and invites readers to consider their blessings and what they have to be grateful for.
I like this approach. It fits in quite well with Byron Katie's WORK, which I have found hugely beneficial in my life.
It's only a short book, which I like because it means there is less faff and more content. My teenage son also read this book and appeared to benefit.

If you read this book, you can find out what the three questions are that will help you to become less self-orientated and feel more connected to the supportive elements of the world. If you ask yourself the questions and answer them honestly, then you will change the way you see your life.
I loved the book, and it's inspired me to start the practice. How very interesting to see how much people give me, and how little i notice it. How very interesting to see how little i give back, and how i can give more very easily and create a better world around me.
