Another thing that distinguishes David Morrell is his attention to detail in the fine points of tradecraft and, in this book in particular, the fine points (and edge)of the knives involved. What he does is explore the knife as a metaphor, not just as a tool, but again as an almost archetypal talisman -- the oldest weapon (next to a rock or club), and one that captures the very essence of close combat.
This is the first thriller e-book with such beautiful illustrations; it reminds me, in some ways, of the old school hardbacks of the first thriller writers: Edgar Rice Burroughs and so on, with the beautiful engravings and line drawings to illustrate the stories. I remember reading JOHN CARTER OF MARS and looking at the beautiful drawings...Morrell does this with the knives he mentions in the text, and I look forward to seeing how many other ways technology can be bent to the writer's vision.
An excellent novel, a brilliant story, an exploration and push at the boundaries of electronic publishing -- one of the best investments of $9.99 you're likely to find, and you can read it on any electronic platform!
Enjoy it. I did.
This time Cavanaugh must go after a highly trained operative whose skills are nearly as good as his. An old friend from his past who initiates a blood feud to divert attention from a far more insidious agenda.
This richly crafted story delivers action as much as it delivers a precise and detailed history of knives which play a major role in the story.
Many writers fall into the trap of writing the same thing over and over, Morrell is one of those who steps out of his comfort zone and writes novels that you want to read because you know that each story is unique and well told with an accuracy that lets you know that Morrell does his research.
Morrell as always been on the 'bleeding edge' (pun intended) of publishing, pushing the boundaries and leading the pack; and he does so again with THE NAKED EDGE. A Kindle exclusive, this book provides not only thrills but a detailed appendix of color photos, an extra that you don't see in novels anymore.
Well worth the $9.99 price tag!
Careful investigation reveals the killer as a long-term friend from childhood who is bitter over being released from the organization. An expert in knives, explosions, and remote death, the killer is always a step ahead of the law as he wreaks havoc over the entire intelligence industry. With the aim of the destruction of thousands of people through several well-placed gas bombs, the killer carefully and effectively eludes all law enforcement efforts. Cavanaugh with the help of his wife eventually ferrets out the killer and ends up in the area known from their childhood where they battle to the end. This kind of rounded binary ending gives the story a solid wrap-up and a tight construction.
The action scenes are amazing and written so that the reader is in the middle of the events. Readers can almost taste the violence being perpetrated and the vivid writing jumps out of the page into reality. In addition, the educational value of the history of knives and knife-making gives the story a plausibility and a significance not often found in thrillers. Morrell's writing is thorough, accurate, descriptive, and highly energetic.
On the down-side, the relationships in the book seem rather shallow, with further vapidity exemplified in stilted dialog and silly quips.Read more ›
As for the Kindle Edition of this book, it's awesome for the extra knife feature at the end! If you like David Morrell and you have a Kindle, do yourself a favor and get this edition. You won't regret it.
