In a complete departure from the subject of his last dark-themed book, Broken Cats and Cowboy Hats, Roger Knowles' new book The Naked Emperor, I found to be more of a relaxing read. In fact, it would make the perfect book to take on holiday with you, as the first part is set in that lovely holiday destination of Cornwall, and it won't stress you, but will amuse you.

I was quite puzzled by the title, and it doesn't figure until near the end, but it all comes together in a very satisfactory and heart-warming way. En route there are some lovely humorous scenes .... I will admit that I am a hard person to amuse, but my favourite was the scene with David of Reliant selling insurance to an unsuspecting client. There are also some lovely scenes with Orph the recalcitrant dog.

I enjoyed this book! It was cute and funny, especially the part about the dog pills for car sickness. It was a very believable vacation dilemma they found themselves in, having to make a decision to change plans after they arrived at their first destination.

Oh no...

Picture this: On a packed bus, standing room only, lots of grumpy, damp people and the girl in the corner at the back erupts into laughter, which is then followed by random outbursts of giggles that she just can't seem to contain. Is she insane? Has she finally lost the plot?

Well, the answer is no. It was me and I was reading The Naked Emperor.

I have to say though, this wasn't the last outburst of this nature, there have been three more as I made my way through the prose.

Very cleverly written, I found myself longing for Simon to come good in the end, for a glimpse of good luck for him, Haze, Orph and the kids. And I was rewarded.

I'm so glad I chose The Naked Emperor for my commute reading material this week, it has really lightened my mood and made me forget about the bleak Scottish weather.

I found myself giggling again when trying to explain the above scenario to my husband (I'm sure he thinks I've finally flipped and need to be carted off) and couldn't finish my sentence. I've told him that he needs to read it himself to understand.

Well done Roger Knowles, yet again, you haven't disappointed!

Having just read a very serious book i was looking for something light hearted and fun...Well i got it in spades with The Naked Emperor.

A man who wants a better life style for himself and his young family sets out to become a poet. None of his chosen publishers can see the talent in his work. Determined to sell his motor bike repair business and start afresh he takes on several projects that are doomed to failure. Just when he is at his lowest ebb and the bank are looking for the overdaraft to be paid off his luck changes and at last his poems are published.......

The story is so funny it has you laughing out loud. The antics of the family dog and the dry wit of his young daughter keep the pace moving forward.

A very enjoyable read. i found myself reading long sections of it to my husband so that he could share the reason for my riotous laughter!

The Naked Emperor is a hilarious read! It's funny, it's clever, it's real - we all know someone like the hero - and although an overused phrase, the book is truly difficult to put down. The author creates real people and so despite the extraordinary happenings of the story, it's believable. You will not just read the words, you will be a fly on the wall watching the events unfold before you. The self depreciating humour of the hero never grows stale, you will laugh through every page. Mr Knowles has the amazing ability to not just allow his readers to follow the text, but also to make them feel. As in all good writing, it has a deeper side and several touching moments when a tear will not be far from your eye. And as you reach the end you will begin to reflect on the wider message of the book - for amusing as it all is, the extraordinary happenings are maybe not that extraordinary at all?

This is an ideal book for your summer vacation when the chapters on a typical British seaside holiday will be particuarly apt!

Do check out the other works by this author. Broken Cats and Cowboy Hats is in a completely different genre, but has in common the fact it is `SUCH A BRILLIANT READ'.

Lots of laughs in this tale of a would-be poet who embarks on one disastrous commercial venture after another, a master at snatching failure from the jaws of success. However his faithful wife Haze is always there to pick him up, dust him down, get behind him and fiddle with his pyjama cord.

I loved his experience in "financial services". Having inside knowledge of the industry, it all rings horribly true. I recognise David Matthews of Reliant FPD. :)

A light-hearted and entertaining read.
