I am a wine lover and avid beer drinker--and a very critical reader and writer.

This book--which I bought because I heard about it on the radio--fills a nice gap.

There are so many wine guides out there (I read Parker, Clive Coates and books on terrior, to give some an idea of my interest level) but there are few if any quality beer guides.

This book is well written, entertaining, makes a great gift for a lot of different types of people (a no brainer for the holidays as a gift, since it's unique and fun.)

On the critical side--a solid and excellent look at beer, period. The most sophisticated beer drinkers will appreciate a ton in this book.

Love it--definitely recommended.

My major complaint is that this book seems to be written by girls that partied way too much with crappy beer now trying to relate with other party girls. Between the constant references to beer causing nights of regretful idiocy and promiscuity to immature giggles at the term "yeast", I don't think I could have felt more disconnected from the authors. The authors frequently allude to concerns about calories in beer but never bother listing the calorie contents of any beers or even suggest any craft beers that happen to be lower in calories.

However, there also were many useful factoids scattered throughout the book about both styles and breweries that I appreciated.

If you know anything about beer, don't buy this book. Not only is it not very educational, it's slightly offensive. Although it's marketed as a "great read for craft beer fans" the writers treat the readers like ignorant 21 year olds who need a spanking. They constantly accuse the reader of drinking bad beers their whole lives and now, just now; they can finally go to a bar and order a craft beer without embarrassing themselves. What?! Listen, you can only consider this a good book if A. You're a woman with a bad sense of humor and can relate to the silly jokes. B. You are new to craft beer, and I mean, NEW. The first 66 pages just make you cringe, it gets less irritating, but the only reason I finished reading it was so i could have a real opinion about it, and yep... it's bad. Not to mention the actual incorrect facts and the lack of support to some of the outrageous statements. Don't bother.

If you have a taste for the many delicious craft beers that are on the market today, or want to learn more about them, this is the book for you. Thorough, detailed, well-researched and really fun to read, "The Naked Pint" gives great guidance on how to develop a personal taste for different styles of beer. And if you've ever felt overwhelmed by too many choices, this is a great reminder that tasting and savoring beer is, after all, supposed to be fun. Highly recommend as a gift item for anyone into craft beer -- experienced consumer or complete novice.

I'm a big fan of craft beer, so this book was a natural for me. But with it's quirky sense of humor and welcoming accessibility, The Naked Pint is the perfect primer for anyone interested in learning about beer. I enjoyed the funny, friendly tone of the authors--it's a refreshing change from the clinical dryness of a lot of other beer guides. On top of that, I appreciated the extensive selection of beers that are so deliciously described. You can't read this book and NOT want to go out and try a pint of something new!

Beer experts Christina Perozzi and Haille Beaune earned their chops managing bars, hosting beer tastings, teaching seminars on beer, and taking every opportunity to publicize and promote the love of craft beer. In this book the authors take the novice craft beer drinker on a journey through the world of craft beer while providing enough insights to interest veteran. They cover the basics of beer – ingredients, how it’s made, history and different styles. They provide several examples of the various styles they discuss with brief tasting notes accessible to the novice. The author’s chapter on the beer lover’s kitchen covers cooking with beer and provides several recipes. An overview of home brewing provides enough information for the novice to decide if they want to tackle taking up the craft and enough information for the more adventurous to brew a batch. They also provide some interesting recipes by some leading brewer’s and home brewers. Perozzi and Beaune conclude with a chapter on entertaining with beer. While not in depth, their writing is accessible and entertaining. This is not the best book on the topic but is a decent introduction.

I bought this book for a friend. We both love craft beer. I looked through it before wrapping it as a Christmas gift. I thought it was just a little better than ok. It still made a nice gift, but the contents weren't as interesting as I had hoped. Also, it's a few years old, and I may rate it higher if it contained newer information. This industry has changed a lot in the past 5 years and this book is rapidly becoming outdated.

Really great, easy to understand, beginners book with plenty of humor. The book is organized from milder flavored beers to strongly flavored beers. With beer recipes & home brew instructions at the end.
