The joystick takes some getting used to. You have to "click" it into position on Ms. Pacman and if you don't you may continue in a direction you don't want to go. You get used to it! But it's still a little different and diagonal positions don't work ... be careful going from left or right to up or down! On Pole Position you use the knob on top of the joystick as a steering wheel! It works pretty well! I find it easier to control than on my Gameboy or GameCube! Galaga and Xevious work VERY well, and MAPPY has no problems either. And yes, the unit produces a dimmer picture than the original NAMCO unit or the ATARI one -- but you can adjust the TV. To me it's not defective - just takes some adjustments and getting used to. You can pause the unit by pressing MENU while playing - something you couldn't do previously with plug and play! Still no save for high scores and you have to get batteries. There is also a RESET button you can press with a pen or pencil if the controller seems to be giving you more trouble than usual.
Despite the issues ... I am having a blast with the games. I haven't seen a better looking adaptation for Ms Pacman -- they got the aspect for a TV right! The control of POLE POSITION has never been better! Xevious is arcade perfect (unlike its GBA counter"cart")! Galaga plays exactly like the arcade! And Mappy is cute and fun! Jakks Pacific rereleased the ACTIVISION plug n play when people had trouble with the original controls, so you can wait and see if they tweak this one. The original NAMCO PLUG N PLAY is still the best in this line of toys, and ATARI comes in a close second. But it still is a value, and a lot of fun, portable, and highly recommended.
So why did I give it three stars, instead of one? Entirely for Galaga. I was one of those geeks that could spend a half-hour playing Galaga using one quarter. The nostalgia value of that alone is worth $20 plus shipping.
Even for just Galaga, there are issues. It is hard to hit the fire button in the rapid, staccato shots needed for "challenge" stages in Galaga (and helpful elsewhere). You have to use your thumb because of the small size of the unit. On the arcade Galaga, I use the tips of my fingers on the fire button, which is placed several inches away from the joystick.
Some intrepid video game maker needs to make a "universal" video game. It would look like an '80s stand-up or table-top game, but would be able to play many (say, 50) classic '80s games. The software issue would be trivial; the hard part would be having buttons, joysticks, knobs (Tempest), trackballs (Centipede, Missile Command), etc. able to handle the different games. Perhaps there would be modules that could be plugged in to the controls area as needed for different games.
I am a fan of the "TV Games" and collected a number of the better "plug-n-play" controllers. This one is good enough for Galaga and Pole Position. But Ms. Pac Man fans need not fain acceptance of this joystick.
There is already a better Ms Pac Man, and it's wireless! Includes Pole Position, Xevious, Rally X, Bosconian, Galaga, and Mappy. [See link below.] Controller has improved, graphics seems sharper, sound is better, heck...IT EVEN SAVES YOUR HIGH SCORES. Pole Position has improved speech, and Bosconian finally has speech it did not have in the other joystick.
The wireless is closer to five stars. More like 4.5 in my opinion. Using a total of 8 AA batteries, it's more overhead to run, but totally worth it. The simulated arcade woodgrain is classy and the joystick design is more arcade-like.
Just spend the extra money on the new one with 7 games. Trust me, you'll never miss the other Ms. PacMan with the same 5 games.

I can't believe that Jakks released this with such a cruddy joystick! I returned this.
My recommendation is DO NOT GET THIS! Their pac-man game is good b/c it actually has a 4-way joystick, but not so with ms pac man. :-(
