The book is about Nancy, Bess, and George being told that a friend of Nancy’s aunt has been tricked by a man into paying for a trip she never got. The gang goes to solve the mystery and makes a few new friends along the way. The friends all have something in common; they all went to see a group called the Hoaxters and have had strange things happen to them ever since. The friends follow the mystery all the way to Mexico where they find a woman whose granddaughter was kidnapped after seeing the show. The gang follows the mystery from there to Los Angles where it is finally solved.
The main characters are Nancy, Bess and George. You all know Nancy. Well here are few things about her. She is very determined, and she will never give up on a mystery. She is also very kind and sweet to everyone she meets. Nancy is always up for a challenge. Bess is one of Nancy’s good friends and George’s cousin. She is a sweet girl and she loves to shop. Bess is a little bit of a fashionista. She is also very concerned about everyone. George is another great friend of Nancy’s. George is very smart and loves to joke around with her cousin. She is also very practical and sweet. The main characters in this book are just great.
I think the theme of the book is that you should help people. Nancy, Bess, and George are always helping people when they solve mysteries. I think by writing about the characters that help people Carolyn Keene is trying to tell us to help people no matter the problem. In the text when Nancy’s dad says “Perhaps you had better come home.” Nancy replies “Oh, Dad, you don’t mean that.” This means she will not give up on helping these people on their cases.
In conclusion, this book was great I give it five stars. It was entertaining and heart racing which is what I look for in a good mystery. I could hardly put it down. I might have gone to bed a little late reading. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good mystery.
Really, as I read the book, I found the story to be somewhat silly in that, not only is Nancy Drew touted as an amateur detective, but suddenly so are Bess and George! Originally, they always were just Nancy's best "chums" who helped her solve HER mysteries. In the older ND mysteries I've read, Bess and George were not generally referred to amateur detectives in their own right (and certainly did not have an "amateur detective allowance" given them by their parents, as George refers to hers in this book!). Also, in this story, the girls are given lodging almost everywhere without question, and everyone who is not a 'bad' character seems to trust them immediately. Some of the older Nancy Drew books were multi-faceted and could be enjoyed on a less superficial level by adults as well as youths, but this story I think definitely fits the 9-12 age bracket. While the artwork was very appealing to come across in the text, and the subtle seventies vibe was very groovy, there are certainly better-written, less goofy, and less oddly convoluted ND books to read than this one.
