A crime has been committed in Florida's Paseo Del Mar High School, and Nancy goes undercover to track down the criminal. Secrets Can Kill is a daring role-playing mystery game that challenges you to solve a murder as you role-play the part of the famous teenage detective, Nancy Drew. Use your powers of deduction to decide which of the students at Paseo Del Mar are friend or foe. As the crime unfolds, explore the town and find hidden clues, solve cool puzzles, collect and save useful inventory items, interrogate the suspects, and catch the murderer red-handed! Solve the mystery--if you dare!

Review

The first title in a series, this two-CD package puts kids in the role of teenage detective, Nancy Drew. In this adventure they explore the town of Paseo Del Mar, Florida, where an unpopular student at the high school has been murdered. As they look for evidence at each of five locations, players discover 300 hidden clues and objects, including keys, coins, a bolt cutter, a pen knife and a remote control. Many of the found objects come in handy for solving the case. The program cleverly involves kids in the action: posters in the school and menus in the diner contain encrypted messages that help unravel the mystery, and kids can talk to the murder victim's fellow students by asking series of questions. They can also get help by calling their friends using numbers on their phone card. Games can be saved for later play. We especially appreciated the "second chance" feature that lets you repeat sections of the game later on. For instance, when testers accidentally caused an explosion at the town's diner, they were glad to be able to go back to the segment just before the disaster instead of starting all over again. Some of the weaknesses of the program stem from the fact that it is a two-CD game that uses DirectX 6.0. You can install it via a compact, 40 MB installation, but we found the mouse action to be sluggish. The full installation requires 220 MB which is a hefty chunk for older, smaller hard drives. The disk swapping is frequent but testers didn't seem to mind. There's also a bug in the program that requires getting technical support or a download from the web site. On the whole, the program's strengths outweigh its weaknesses. Girls loved the murder mystery adventure theme and enjoyed exploring the high school, diner and other parts of the town. Even though finding and using the clues and objects was very challenging, they played the game repeatedly. Only one tester has solved the mystery so far and that was with the help of a cheat sheet. The next program in the series, Nancy Drew Stay Tuned for Danger, is terrific.
Teaches: logic, problem solving, deductive thinking

Well,my freind has the 2nd CD-rom and i think it was great but this one is tops all other CDs. This game stimulates the mind while you think you're having fun and not really knowing that you are learning to de-code and problem solve a life skill. Now here's the fun stuff,it has eerie music to keep you on your toes ,suspects ,the innocent ones, the crimes they commited but aren't in your own case. Please i would rate this a ten but there isn't enough stars so boo hoo and I think that someone really likes snooping would get they're joy out of this because there is more than just snooping there is people who try to strangle you and {Game Tip} dont ask one to many questions they could get on to you so keep it not too wordy.....and look for clues in tasks you may be asked and when your magnifying glass lights up you can click on something so just scan over every tid bit of everything ,and this is more than you need to hear!! I loved it ,I recommend it 100%, and that you dont need to play the games in order like 1-4 because they just might only use names from other games not their crimes .I loved it it is the best i am out of words i have said it all. I would encourage you to write a reveiw tell your own feelings about this game.

I confess. I'm 20 years old, and still a Nancy Drew Fan. On the hunt for a new Riven-esque game, with a 'solve a mystery while exploring various locales' type theme, I stumbled across the Nancy Drew games from Her Interactive. I decided to try Secrets Can Kill, the first game, and see what they were like. I was instantly hooked. Although designed for younger people, I still found this game challenging and enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the different puzzles that turn up throughout the game, from the standard 'read the words backwards' ones, to the more confusing puzzles requiring you to find different bits of info in several places, and then combine them for a solution. My only gripes with this game are that the cursor is not quite versatile enough - it changes to an upside down arrow when you are both turning around or exiting a building, which was confusing the first few times it happened. I also didn't like that some of the hallways in the High School were nearly indestinguishable. I spent a lot of time going back and forth trying to find my way to the library or some other location. Last, the conversations with the students didn't always run the way I would have liked - if you choose to ask the wrong question first, you lost the opportunity to ask a more vital one later in the same conversation. This can be annoying, and time consuming, as you have to go back and forth to the same person trying to use up all your conversation options. Overall, though, I would highly reccomend this game to any fan of a challenging, fun, exciting computer game. This game is great for kids and adults alike, and may even provide some good family time in front of the computer (something very rare these days), as the whole family can certainly sit down and work out the puzzles together or just have fun while exploring the different places within the game while searching for clues.

I bought this game for my daughter for her 14th birthday. I didn't play the game myself but saw that she had a great time with it. She's been playing Nancy Drew games for about 5 years now and enjoys them a lot. Sometimes I do sit down and help her solve a mystery. She always is anxious for the next game to come out! I believe she has solved all of the current ones out now.

Buyer beware: This was the second copy of this game I have purchased - I returned the first copy when I couldn't get it to install on my computer. My PC is new (purchased July 2005) and has plenty of power and memory, but this game crashed my computer three times, and the last time - immediately after I uninstalled the game - it had a hard time recovering from the crash. (I have played three of the later Nancy Drew games on the same computer with no problems.) In addition, the game is muddled and confusing, with a poor plotline and an unsatisfying ending. It relies too heavily on decoding secret message after secret message (most of which did nothing to help me advance the game), and not enough on sleuthing or interacting with the other characters. Switching between discs was no big deal at first, but about halfway through the game, it started to accelerate until I was switching discs every 5 minutes (NOT an exaggeration). I absolutely DO NOT recommend this game - go buy one of the later Nancy Drew games instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic - Gotta love the O.G Nancy games!

So happy I got my hands on this game again! Absolute classic and what started the ND games :) of course the animations are a bit cheesy compared to the newer games and switching discs to access different locations can be a hassle, but it’s got its charm. Item arrived perfectly (and earlier than expected) in original case, met my expectations. Now I can relive my childhood nostalgia!
