My particular camcoder is a Canon XA-10 with a shotgun mic. mount on the side. Unfortunately, the light is too wide to fit in the cold shoe and not interfere with the mic. Other lights have a 1/4" screw mount built into the cold shoe mount so you can tripod mount or use an adapter to raise the light a half inch or so to clear the mic. This one doesn't have a screw mount, which would have been a simple and add no or little cost to the manufacturer. I have ordered a hot shoe adapter meant for still cameras in the hope that it will raise the light the half inch I need to clear the mic.
Anyhow,I still own (3) really excellent medium format film cameras. (2) Mamiya 645J's and a Yashica Mat 124G Twin Lens Reflex. I am in the process of testing out these old cameras because they use the same 120 format film as the Lomos and Holgas only with excellent picture quality and no light leaks etc. I still think I can get Holga type pictures using Photoshop or GIMP in the post processing stage.
Unfortunately, the x-sync socket on my Yashica Mat no longer functions, meaning that connecting a flash and having it function is now impossible. I just love this camera for it's lightness, ease of use and exceptional pictures that it produces.
Repairing the damage would be quite expensive I was told, let alone having spare parts.
When I first heard about video lights, I imagined they only worked for camcorders. I was surprised that in looking at the Amazon product line, there were many fine products that worked equally well with still cameras both digital and film. I even saw many Canon DSLRs with a small video light in the hot shoe socket.
Anyhow, I just received my video light today. I tested it out and photographed my son from a distance of 5 to 10 feet with my digital camera and was truly amazed at the amount of brightness emitting from this tiny unit. Actually, for a few dollars more, I should have bought the Neewer brand which is a more powerful unit.
Otherwise, this unit is mainly to replace my flash which can no longer work with my Yashica Mat since there is no connectivity between the x-sync socket and my Vivitar 283 flash.
For anything from 5-10 feet out or something in the portrait mode, this guy really works well.
However, my great compliment is now I can continue to take flash(video) portraits with my Twin Lens Reflex. Otherwise, highly recommended. Also, I just used it as a backlight on my flatbed scanner to illuminate my old negatives both 35mm and 120mm.
I have not used this led light bundle a lot, but when I did use it I was happy to have the extra light. I think that I should try it under more circumstances than what 's stated above, but I just don't think about taking it with me a lot.
I'm not a professional photographer and I know this light won't replace a modern off camera flash unit, but its a LOT better than cursing the darkness and not lighting a candle. Oh - it IS much brighter than a box full of candles.
If I think to use the light more I'll update the review.
UPDATE: The thumb dial came loose. Now it doesn't work. I've used this light maybe four or five times before this happened. Not sure that I can fix it, but I will try.
UPDATE: I managed to fix this item. There's a small screw that holds the thumb dial in place. Apparently, the Chinese don't know how to tighten a screw so it doesn't come loose. Anyway, it now works once again. The repair took me about five minutes and require a micro screw driver.
This gadget's part of my on-the-go interview kit when I speak to people at live events. It's a rig with a DSLR, microphone, and this bad boy. So much more comfortable than my old DVCAM broadcast cameras.
The tungsten, pink, and diffuser filters are quite nice. They're even double-sided so you don't have to worry about installing it incorrectly (and they include a nifty little case).
I like that it uses AA batteries; I'm partial to using rechargeable ones, because I have so many of them.
My only point of improvement is the battery door, it's a little light to the touch and easy to fall off. It shouldn't directly affect your shoot, but I wish it could fit more snug.
Overall, this one's a winner! Great for the videographer on the go.
