However, there is one issue that may be considered a positive or a negative: this is a very difficult game. The enemies are tough. One wrong move and it's game over. It would be nice if the 'easy' mode was just that, but even that mode may drive casual gamers away.
Part of what makes it so very difficult is the lack of saving. Much like DS Contra, the main game is "all or nothing" - you make it to the end of each level or die trying, and your progress is not saved when you turn off the DS. Every time you must start the game over. Granted, once you finish a level you can play it standalone for practice, but it still can grueling to start at the beginning every single time.
Still, its a fun ride, and its obvious a lot of work and attention to detail went into the game.
The game has a great soundtrack that never got boring, and amazing visuals.
It's got quite a few different play modes too, including some challenge rounds that unlock mini games like an Araknoid ripoff which are pretty fun.
There were a few disappointments for me, though. I didn't think there were enough levels, or enough varieties of enemies, and the bosses take WAY too long to defeat. I also wish the special weapons were more useful, as I barely used any of them except in the challenges where they are necessary.
This was a great game to pass the time while on an airplane or waiting for the subway, which is exactly why I bought it.
They've added a selection screen at the beginning of the game so that you can choose your level of difficulty. This adds tremendously to the replay value. You can play on an easier selection and then increase the level of difficulty as you improve.
There are several selections for gameplay. The main game is the Adventure mode. After you finish each mission and fight the boss at the end you unlock challenge groups which you can play in the Challenge mode. These are mini game shooters which are tons of fun in themselves. After you play and win the challenge group you unlock simulators which you can then play anytime in the Simulators selection. In addition there is an Arcade selection of games which are smaller mini segments from the main adventure game. There is also a setting for two players, using either one card or two cards. I haven't used this setting yet so I can't tell you the differences between the two.
As you can see there is a lot to do in this game. You definitely get your money's worth. The graphics are fantastic. It seems that a lot of time and thought was put into almost all parts of this game and it has paid off in hours and hours of fun, challenges and excitement.
