Set on the romantic island of Nantucket off the coast of Massachusetts at Christmas time featuring a 3 year old, an abandoned dog, newlyweds and a couple expecting their second child, you would expect a terrific story. hmmmm, What I got was Kennedy, married and 8 months pregnant with her 2nd child. And for some god forsaken reason she wants to inflict on her father the pain of remarriage to her mother - her cold as ice mother - who left their marriage for another man. Oh, and BTW he is already happily newly married to a lovely woman.

The novel just lost me there. Also it was about 100 pages shorter than I thought it needed to be a deep satisfying read.
Nicole, is a 50 something widow newly married to Sebastian who needs to stand up for herself
Sebastian is a 60 something retired Attorney who needs to convict his daughter for immaturity
Kennedy is his daughter who really needs to be swept out to sea
Katya is the exwife who needs to go to sea with her daughter
Snix-Pooh is the dog who needs a new name
Max is the tiny tot who needs to get dialogue suited to his age and not someone much older

Nicole is the main character and the most outsider of the group, she married into this crazy dysfunctional family and this is her first Christmas in their mix. She takes quite the emotional beating while still keeping a game face on - I was extremely proud of the abuse she took, I couldn't have done it!

Nicole mostly deals with a grown step daughter who even as an adult with parents that have been separated for awhile dreams of her family reuniting. I found her to be the most frustrating and each time she spoke, I cringed.

"A Nantucket Christmas" is a sweet, cozy read that pulls a few punches, but mainly caught me up in the fever for Nantucket holiday fare. The story line I have read often, but then I chose to read softer, more hopeful books around the holidays.

The characters are enjoyable if not entirely believable. The plot is sweet especially with the deserted dog. My eyes misted up at his story line. So, the writing was presented well enough that I could believe that the dog was narrating for me at times.

I recommend it around the holidays and hope it brings joy to your life.

Just finished this book (1st I've read by this author) --
it had some pretty lame, distasteful (sexual) jokes/innuendos
included in this unbelievably shallow (an adult wrote this?!)
excuse for 'a Nantucket Christmas'
I just read the blurb on the author (on Amazon page) that says she's from Nantucket --
I can't believe it! I just assumed she'd probably visited (at least 1x) +/or had done some research/
reading(/talked to friends) about Nantucket during the holidays~~ she knew the roads are cobblestone, sidewalks brick, the names of a few shop-owners . . . but, sadly, that was all. Barely any character development. No community involvement (don't tell me that shop-owners knowing their wealthiest customers' names is 'community spirit' !) -- the main character had ONE friend whom we learned about in this book!!

TOO MANY of the scenes were from the point of view of a dog (which stopped being charming quickly . . . since I am a grown adult)
OR A 4-YR-OLD CHILD ! Again, 'Mommy made me eat my veggies -- even the yucky lettuce i don't like' does NOT pass for good writing for an adult book, EVEN if it's a Christmas-time story; Christmas doesn't equal brainless.

Throw in some unexpected sexual references that are so out-of-place
you'll actually stumble over their obvious crudeness, wondering,
"is she serious?" & glance back at the title to make sure it's the same fluffy Disney-type book
you've been trying to get through for the past coupla days.

Not to mention: *heads-up* on the

A Nantucket Christmas
By
Nancy Thayer

My " in a nutshell" summary...

Sebastion and Katya divorce...Sebastion remarries Nicole...his daughter Kennedy is determined to be miserable over the holidays...and what about the poor puppy?

My thoughts after reading this book...

Although I love love love Nancy Thayer beach books and the idea of a lovely Nantucket Christmas sent me over the top...I did not like this book. All I thought about during this entire book...was do summer people in Nantucket just drop off their pets in the middle of nowhere to fend for themselves? And this was a puppy! A baby! Poor Snix! And I am not even sure that Snix had a happy ending! He ate meatloaf and slept with Sebastion's grandson but who is keeping poor hungry cold Snix! This lost puppy aspect of this book really got to me and was all that I could think of...it was sweet but very sad!

What I loved about this book...

This book has all the parts of a Nancy Thayer book that push my reading buttons...the overbearing privileged daughter...the horrible ex wife who actually invades Nicole's home, the silent magnificent new wife...trying to please everyone...but...she had to go and add the starving puppy! Why, Nancy Thayer, why? Nantucket at Christmas...beautiful, festive, snowy, gingery, magic...but I was always worried about poor lost trembling starving Snix!

What I did not love about this book...

It feels as though someone said to Nancy Thayer...you should write a Christmas book...and so she did. She delivered but I am not sure I loved it. All the mean bullies were there and the ex wives and you knew that in the end they would get their "comeuppance" but I still don't know what will happen to Snix...
