This deck of cards is an authentic deck of Italian playing cards. Italian playing cards most commonly consist of 40 cards (4 suits from 1-7 and 3 face cards). The three face cards in each deck are the King, Cavallo (calvary man) and Fante (Infantry Man), except in the French region (see below) which uses a Queen instead of a Cavallo. Playing with Italian playing cards gives any player a wonderful historical perspective on this great country.

The countless hours I spent as a child playing "scopa" and "briscola" with my family.
There's something about these regional cards, be they from Napoli, Brescia, Veneto, Sardinia, wherever.. All regional designs of cards in Italy have a story to tell and a certain "feeling" to them.
Everything is amazing, the size (which I love, smaller than standard french cards), the material (superb quality from Modiano, every time), and the designs (each card has personality, and somehow make all games more enjoyable).
In conclussion, a great quality product, with great durability and looks. I'll always recommend Modiano cards to anyone who asks!
I played with my father-in-law, who's from Naples, and he instantly felt at home with these. He wondered where I got them and for how much. I told him Amazon for a mere $7. He thought that was reasonable. He then (re)taught us all how to play Scopa, and even my 5 year old jumped in, which made me happy.
If you're looking for a fun change from the standard 52 playing card deck, and don't mind learning some new games, then give this a whirl. You might like it.
This said, the cards I bought in Italy some 10-15 years ago are even better -- even a bit thicker, with a slightly higher gloss. Also, the faces of the figures are slightly too orange -- the originals were in a more natural pink complexion. It must be the general quality of Modiano which is also slowing coming down. But still, I am being very picky here: this is still as good as you can buy.
In terms of quality, these cards have a very attractive design and the glossiness you would expect from almost any new deck of cards.
Depending on your (or the gift recipient's) familiarity with card games, you may want to print out a separate, larger instruction sheet for them to read and get familiarized with the game. For obvious reasons, the instructions are squeezed onto the front of one playing card size sheet and could be a bit muddlesome for one who doesn't pick up new card playing variations easily.
