Narco Submarines: Covert Shores Recognition Guide Paperback – March 26, 2020

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 60 ratings

Narco Submarines is the go-to guide to the low-profile vessels used to smuggle narcotics in Latin America and across the Atlantic. These vessels are one of the least understood corners of modern international crime. This book is the first to cover the topic in detail. Based on research of over 180 reported incidents, this book presents a practical quick reference recognition aid. It includes a detailed taxonomy, type overviews, cutaway drawings, recognition images, photos and profiles. Narco Submarines is an essential guide for law enforcement, Navy, analysts and those interested in this true crime.

As a Colombian I bought this book as the topic of narcosubmarines, while widely known in the country, it’s rarely discussed in-depth, so I was really pleased with the copious amounts of information, graphics and photos available in this book, I can honestly say I learned a lot about it, and might even be at the level of some members of the navy. But with that said, the editing and formatting of the book needs work, the current large format looks more like a school textbook than an actual book, and when I look inside the pages there’s just too much unused space inside to justify the size, not to mention some graphics would have benefited from a smaller size, especially when two of different resolutions are put next to each other.Plus there’s some details here and there that needed catching, like calling Colombians “columbians”, and some text boxes eating into the graphics under them.Overall though, I cannot recommend this book enough, it’s priceless information that has been superbly researched, and no amount of cosmetic issues will take that away from it.

If you are at all interested in the use of submarines by drug smugglers, this is the book for you. The author maintains an extremely detailed and well-researched website on all things submarine, and this book is basically an extract of the entries related to narco subs.

There is an attempt to establish a taxonomy of submarine types, and map this to the number of reported incidents. While there is enough information to start inferring who the builders are, the book does not draw any firm conclusions. Each type of submarine gets an overall writeup, then there is a brief analysis of construction and incidents.

I'd strongly suggest following the author's web presence for updates: the book goes up to 2019 and there have been significant changes since.

If these things matter to you, there are a few minor typos and spelling errors. The cover picture is not great, I stared at it for a while trying to figure out what it was.

I’m a career-long journalist myself — having something close to 40 years as a professional writer with a special focus on finance, investing, global economics and defense/aerospace.

I’m a regular reader — and fan — of H.I. Sutton’s work online. I saw his books cited in a report on the New Cold War and submarines — and ended up buying three different titles of his.

Nifty reference works and fascinating reads. So glad I ordered them ... Sutton does nice work ...

This is the most comprehensive guide to the narco-submarine currently available. The May 2014 Army FMSO study, "Narco-Submarines" by Ramirez & Bunker, editors, was the go to guide until this publication. Mr. Sutton has provided a very complete update to this document as well as a great deal of new information and insight into the international shipment of drugs. I have two of his previous publications, "World Submarines - Covert Shores Recognition Guide" , and "Covert Shores" ; all provide excellent reading.
BRAVO!!

Excellent illustrations and explanations of the various types of different semi and fully submersible vessels used in 'the trade'... but the technical specs are very thin. No mention of engine specifics and horsepower, battery number or type or endurance, etc on the various more advanced vessels - which I was quite hoping for. Overall, less a 'Janes Fighting Ships' type information book and more an extended commentary on classification.

It's great. All narcosubs (and there are lots) classified, described, with cutaways, the story behind each design. Really good.

Does exactly what it says, but I am disappointed in the print materials. It's literally just laser printed A4 paper.
