A lot packed in, in a small book

Yes, there are LOTS of books out there on audio recording. This one goes more into the study and range of character and narrator voices than most and how to prepare your voice. He also covers how to test different studio/room set ups and quality. Though he says the book is only a basic training on the recording and editing parts, I found it to be more detailed than others and therefore lost me in parts. But I'm a true beginner. You have to get over the "what's that" mode.

He really gets deep into the weeds, especially with the Audition settings. I learned so much! I have watched a number of audio mastering videos, so I already knew some of the things he was talking about, but he went in-depth on what settings to use (or not) and why. Great resource.

This is one of those times that I set out to learn something with the thought that it would further my goals, only to find out that this is not something I want to do after all.

In fairness, this book is jam packed with useful, actionable content delivered in a concise, entertaining manner.

But my biggest takeaway is that recording an audiobook is vastly more work than I'm willing to put into it and it's not a process nor a skillset that I would enjoy.

However, it has gone a long way toward helping me to appreciate the amount of work that goes into an audiobook as well as the challenges. And I think just maybe I might have a better understanding now of the sorts of things I should provide to my narrators in preparation for having a book recorded.

Sometimes you read a book and what it helps you realize is what you don't want to do. That was the case with this book. I have recently started making my books available for audio book and I wondered what would be involved if I did it myself, even though I'm happy with the people doing the current work.

Reading this book helped me appreciate those people even more. It also helped me appreciate why I don't want to record audio books myself. The author does a great job of laying out what you need to do if you want to go down that path. I read the entire book and I feel like its also given me a better understanding of what questions to ask as well as what to listen for when I hear a recording of audio for my books.
